Glad this thread has got back to what I intended originally!! We recently acquired four new hens. The new ones are Warrens (POL) to join our 3 buff Orpingtons (+ cockerel) 2 Black Rocks and one elderly Warren!! We were supposed to be getting some ex-battery hens - when the legislation changed banning battery hens a friend of a friend had arranged to buy a few from someone who couldn't adapt to the new legislation. The owner had found homes for most of the birds but they hadn't gone when the date of change arrived (early Feb?). A week later DEFRA officials arrived - insisted all the hens were killed (despite most having got future homes) and all the eggs were smashed!! How crazy is that?

shocking state of affairs in this day and age when everyone is on about animal welfare , and wasting food , felt really bad having to throw away eggs from poorly chook who was on antibiotics , but it certainly wasnt on the scale that you are on about , poor chooks

I know plenty of people round here who have taken in ex-batts recently due the changed legislation, and there were no such issues there.
