mine foaled at 5am this morning never used a foaling alarm just a camera. she was restless all nite then started to foal at 5 foaled by 5.05 its that quick!! all ive heard about foaling alarms is that you can get false alarms with them. ive always used a camera and watch them. if they know your watching them (i.e over the door) they wont foal.

Yes they do work!
We have used a foaling alarm for the past few years and the alarm has always gone off in enouh time for us to be there and watch the birth - about 20 minutes notice.
We did have a few false alarms, but would rather that then something goes wrong and we were not there to oversea anything. They work on heat, ie relying on the mare to get hot - sweat during labour, this temperature change sets off the alarm. However you can change the sensitivity of the heat sensor so you dont get that many false alarms.
I personaly would use them every year, they are very easy to hire (the people are very friendly and helpful) and use not really expensive.

CCTV is the best and some of them do go up to a mile. However, foaling alarms are very good - and you can hire them. Or you could get a tent!

i can stay in the lorry on the yard, but dont really want to keep creeping in and peering over the door disturbing her ...CCTV would be ideal ..think my house is less than a mile away from yard, where do i get the 1 mile ones from ? Looked on the net and can only find up to 300m
