Imo, synchronised should have been eliminated upon fall of the rider, he never should have run in the first place. And how heartbreaking for all according to pete's connections, desperately upsetting.

Awful tragedy. Synchronised should never have been allowed to run and he died at the death trap Bechers- not far into the race. As usual the 2 deaths will be swept aside.
A McCain horse died on Thursday and he just said " These things happen" Of course they do but they shouldn't.
What is the Grand National death toll to date? Pretty large I'd guess.

When I saw the family who owned 'According to Pete' before the race I said 'If they care about their horse that much why are they risking its life?!' I feel sorry for the horses but not the owners!

Oh god how very very sad!!!!! Seen the woman getting upset before the race that was connected according to pete. Devastating but just shows they know the risks before they run the horses!!! Very very upsetting I always watch it but it does play on my mind alot. On a different note katie walsh rode brilliantly and nice to see a woman get round but surely it must dampen everyones spirits to lose two such wonderfull horses :-(

I have just read this somewhere else on line
"But without racing none of these animals would exist. Sad though I agree it is, there are many worse deaths in the animal world"
and tend to agree
Yes, 09rebel99, Katie Walsh was terrific and at one stage we thought it looked like she could possiby win .... the day a female jockey crosses the winning line first @ the GN is not far away methinx

This is why I don't like, or watch this race. A terrible, tragic loss of life- IMO Synchronised shouldn't have been running, there was a lot of doubt over his jumping and especially after his rider fell off! Awful H&H did a feature on According to Pete- he was clearly such a lovely horse- its awful to read it and know he never made it back home I am not against racing persay- but I think this particular race is just too dangerous. If a jockey died there would be outcry!

All equine sports/activities have the potential to be dangerous, obviously running in the grand national is potentially far more dangerous than say an in hand M & M class!!!!! I feel it's a bit strong saying the owners of horses that die in the race don't deserve any pity as it was thier choice to enter the horses. If a mare dies during foaling you can bet the owner will get plenty of sympathy even though it was thier choice to put the mare in foal.............. I do feel sorry for connections of the 2 horses that died. I watch the grand national every year and will continue to do so. I also agree the field is too big and needs to be cut down to 20 - 25. I thought the finish was fantastic RIP to those 2 brave horses that died and sympathy to thier connections

I also agree the field is to big as most the falls are caused by others falling over others and normally in the first half.
I am not against racing at all and people that critisise horses dying in races dont look at the picture! Dont know exact figures but i know its something ridiculous like out of every 500 race horses that are bred only one makes it to the top which makes the other surpless to requirements and most end up going for meat!!
At least those brave horses died pretty quick and doing something that they probably loved and in their short lives they will have had the best of everything.

Any horse lover wouldn't dream of risking their horses life intentionally and in my opinion the Grand National is the biggest risk you could put a race horse through. So tragic. RIP two very brave horses

So so sad hate watching it am on tender hooks for the whole race. Haven't watched it for the last two years as it is always devastating when these tragic things happen and could be avoided by just letting the fences be lower and for these horses to be up to the race. Thinking of these tragic horses and may they run in peace now. I know there are risks but I am sure these risks can be reduced and still have the thrill factor there. I am aware there are always risks with equine sports but this seems extreme and unfair to the horses that have lost their lives on this track. Bless them all xxx

Worth noting that Synchronised had not long ago been hard raced in Cheltenham Gold Cup, was a small horse and carrying top weight in the National.
Also seems he ran on for a while with a fractured hind leg!!Poor horse.

I have just posted in the Lounge and Snug area about According to Pete - they were such a lovely family who put everything they had into that horse. They weren't toffy nosed rich owners who didn't care about the horse but only the money they made them. When Claire Balding nipped to ask them if they were ok in the tack up area they didn't really talk due to being choked with neves and the daughter said that she will be in the loos wearing he lucky jacket as she daren't watch.
I know that these things happen in this sport but it is just so sad that it happened to possibly the most genuine and down to earth family I have seen with a race horse in a long time.
I'm sure they are devastated, as I would be if it were mine.
Much love to them, I will be thinking of them for a few days to come I think!

Worth noting that Synchronised had not long ago been hard raced in Cheltenham Gold Cup, was a small horse and carrying top weight in the National. Also worth asking - was there REALLY any need to risk him after his Cheltenham success. Owner had 3 other runners, one of which finished 2nd!! Sad waste of another super horse who we wont be able to enjoy watching next year According to Pete - truly gutted for connections - as said in previous post - really nice people who bred and loved him - desperate bad luck. Heart goes out to stable staff of both these beautiful boys RIP

It is like anything with risks attached. If it had worked well it would have been wonderfull unfortunatly it didnt go that way today. I think the owners will have enough on the concience without getting slated for it and people saying they have no sympathy. My thoughts really do go out to them and syncronised aswell :-(

rip both horses, died doing something they loved. Gutted for both sets of connections, both were homebreds which makes it worse.

RIP two lovely horses.I agree Synchronised should not have run after throwing his rider and cantering for ages before being cantered back to the start! He must have covered a fair bit of ground doing that .

I haven't seen anything either, they are probably keeping quiet as they know the uproar they will get if it hear that 5 actually died!
Poor fellas, at least they aren't the ones that are suffering anymore - its just all their connections that they leave behind.

I always admired the Duchess of Westminster who refused to let Arkle enter this dangerous race. I also was impressed with the remarks of Jenny Pitman who was reluctant to let her horse run one year after walking the course of the GN. When she protested on the morning and afterwards after carnage, she was told to shut up, you know nothing. When she asked the grand person from the jockey club if he had witnessed the turf, he said no, he hadn't.
I cannot watch this race live, although sometimes I view the video coverage afterwards. Don't know why, it seems easier after the event.
The winner looks exactly like my Jake would - if he was buffed up a bit. There is no way I would let him go through it, although he is an ex-chaser and I suppose that this resulted in the scars on his legs!
