just been sorting out which classes to enter, and every year Ash like to do the pairs/adult and child etc for fun, came across the adult and child class and read the description, this year it says adults to ride horses ex 158cm and children to ride ponies under 148cm, i was hoping Ash would be able to do this class on her 13.2 fell and find an adult riding a similar pony, but after reading the description this will not be possible, also it looks as though this will be a class of mainly plaited horses and ponies as not many m&ms exceed 158cm such a shame as these are fun classes to compete in, i thought the grey highland and little shetland ponies looked fab, but with the new description even they wont be eligable to compete

Thats a really odd rule - surely they'd be better to just say "adults horse to be a larger height than the child's"? It's only a 'fun' sort of class after all?

Thank you for your comments - there has been a discussion on the Equifest Face Book page regarding the Adult & Child class and we have agreed to relax the height restrictions. However - the objective of this class is to have an Adult and a Child rider on two animals of visibly DIFFERENT sizes - it is not a matching pairs class. Providing there is a "little" and "large" we will not restrict the heights. We have now put an amendment on the Equifest website to state this.
Yours sincerely

Thank you for the reply Betsy does it matter which person is on the smaller pony? Eg could the adult be on the smaller pony? Thanks x

How strict will you be with the split of the m&m pairs class? What if two friends want to do it on different sized M&Ms?

We do not have a problem with M&Ms competing, but ideally there should be at least 4" / 10cms difference in height between the two. Last year the class was looking like a pairs class. Ideally, the child should be on the smaller pony. We don't want to spoil anybody's enjoyment, but the Judges will be advised accordingly, so that, hopefully, the most sucessful exhibitors will be the ones with an obvious difference in height with the younger rider on the smaller pony. I hope that this helps,
Betsy

Phew thank you Betsy - I must admit the pair that won last year were fab, but there were a perfectly matching pair, with hardly any age gap between the riders.
Myself and Georgia came 2nd, as we werent quite such a perfect match, being one on horse and one on pony.
This new rule does make it fairer - but maybe next year, there should be a set age gap between adult and child? Therefore not a 17 year old child, riding with a 18 year old adult?

Adult and Child ride together as a pair. Do a "go round" together, then an individual show - as set by the judge - together, side by side. Top 10 pairs get pulled in and then last year went into the main ring for final judging.

The best Adult and Child we did was with a 13.2 Fell and an 11.3 Dartmoor with the riders having a difference in age of about 14 years. They had a lovely time and the Adult was on the small pont and the younger taller child on the Fell.

Ah, that's a shame. Have matching m&ms but can't do m&m pairs as that one clashes with concours presentation which our pair rider is hoping to be in. Oh well, never mind.

I think this a fair rule to set, a couple of years ago myself & my friend did adult & child, I was about 13 & on a 133cm coloured SHP & my friend was about 19 & on a 153cm coloured hunter. We did this class a few times & I remember one time we came 2nd to two Section D's who, in all fairness, a very good pair, but they must have had about a 2 year age gap.
I'm hoping to find an adult on a little black hairy pony to go with me & my black hairy Fell pony. ;D

" Being the adult member of the winning pair last year i can confirm that there is a lot more than a couple of years difference in our ages. At the show i was 23 and my child jockey was 11! We had a lovely time and looking at my child jockey this year one huge growth spurt later she would be on the big horse this year and this midget staying on the little pony! Shame we don't have the appropriate sized beasties to contest our title! :-(
