would like peoples opinions on if you think this mare could be in foal. I have owned her for a few years now and last year someones colt escaped into my field!! anyway i can not for the life of me remember when it was over than at some point last summer! lol. anyway i know for a fact she was in season when he got in there. Thought things were ok but starting to look at her and i think he belly is looking rather low, although not low as in ready to pop but lower than i would call normal (this or could it be a worm problem with a pot belly?!), shes not a brilliant doer and i struggle to keep weight on her through winter months, she is one that will always drop off to a certain extent. anyway i have turned her out at grass for the last week and she is very diff shape to the other girls. he teats also looks fuller than normal but not full to say she was bagged up, but could be bagging up slowly as diff mares bag and foal differently maybe?! im hoping its a crazy idea that i have got in my head and praying she isnt in foal. but what do you guys think?? IF you think she is in foal would the vet be able to comfirm a rought due date...? she is rising 4 and never bred before. (sorry the pics arent brill!)

wormed with panacur 5 day guard at the end of march so is coming up to being due to be wormed again. but i do tend to worm religously and have a plan set up with my vet so i change each type. im almost hoping that is is worms!!!

Presume youve also wormed for tape aswel then, her belly does look a little suspicious, is it even on both sides when you look from behind? If you are having the vet come for anything else then Id get them to check but wouldnt worry just yet, may just be a pot belly.

Get the vet to PD her. They would be able to tell you if she is in foal or not but probably not when it is due. If you know definately that she is you would then be able to monitor her for the impending birth. Shouldn't be a pot belly due to worms if you have a comprehensive, vet approved, worming plan.

trying to get hold of vet to get her out to jsut confirm it, but after having another good look today i think she is too will have to bring her back home where i have the stables and other mare and foal as ive just turned her out at grass! bloody typical - wanted to put her in foal this year or next to a reg and licensed stallion - not breed a mongrel! haha

Not too late, provided you have the facilities to deal with this one too.

Try and get a head on, or rear on shot of her. You tend to find if it's a foal bump, there will be more sticking out one side than the other. May be best to leave her on some good grass until you are sure.

Not wintered very well has she? dont overdo the feed now it will only go to the foal .

How old is she? She looks quite thin, apart from her belly, I would get her onto a good balancer ASAP whether she is in foal or not.

shes rising 4 and never winters particularly well. she is on conditioning cubes with top spec balancer. will be leaving her at grass until the vet has come out to confirm it as dont want to bring her back to the yard as they wintered there so not much grass there at the moment obviously if she is in foal she will come back!

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I can't help wonder why you didn't get a scan done after the colt had been in the field? If you knew then, you could have made a decision about whether to let the pregnancy proceed rather than breed something that isn't wanted. That's what I would have done and I would likely have told the colt owner that he/she was responsible for the costs.

i have more chance of getting blood out of a stone than get the owner to pay for any costs. more likely to try and charge me a stud fee! the costing isnt an issue though - although something that anyone could of done without as such i am happy to get it done so i know. Ive already said its my fault that i didnt get her checked at the time and i should of done

Fair do's - at least you're dealing with it now.....and maybe you will get a beautiful free foal from it (think of the saving in the stud fee!)

I suppose i was very ignorant and almost made myself believe it would be ok! As long as mare and foal both turn out healthy i dont mind. i was a bit worried my current foal on the ground would be lonely come weaning as she is my only foal this year as the other mare didnt take. Looks like that problem may be solved now!!
There is a slight worry in my head though that the mare in question is only little approx 12.2hh if that and said colt was quite a big lad, wouldnt know for definate as he was unhandled but guess around 14.2 ish maybe....

Don't worry about that, the mare will determine the size of the foal whilst she is carrying him

confirmed in foal yesterday! bringing her home to stable block and going on 2 - 3 small feeds a day to help her pick up a bit better. vet thinks she still has approx 8 to 10 weeks to do but obviously this could be wrong! thanks for all your help
