When you get a stallion who produces stock (7 qualified R/I for 2012) a Royal welsh champ and HOYS pony of the year. Stands at stud for £300 and no visiting mares! I know times are hard but what do people want!

your joking - only £300 and still no interest!

Yes, very odd indeed when you also consider its a section B, so useful for breeding M&M's and hunter ponies/whps. We can thoroughly vouch for the stock's temperaments too!
Maria went to her first two buzzy county shows last week and let's face it the weather was not ideal either! In both cases she behaved amazingly well. All she did when about four four-in-hand's trundled past, was to cock her head to one side as if to say 'well I never'! And, whilst clearly biased, we think she is georgous too!

People must be mad Vicky! I can not believe that....now is the time to use the proven sires such as Taliesin and not take chances when the market is like it is at the moment.
I know people are cutting down but we are going to a have a massive void where no quality animals have been bred when the market has recovered and believe me it will recover- it has done before and will do again. Don't get me wrong I still think too many ponies have been bred for the sake of breeding but I just think you need to be more selective- after all I still know enough people that have put mares in foal this year. I strongly believe you need to be prepared to keep what you breed and should not be counting on selling nevertheless.
Sorry, rant over!
Catkin- I loved Maria she is a super mare and I am not surprised she is doing well! She is a credit to her breeders and you.

There was an interesting thread a while ago in the 'moaners' area. Basically the premise being that all breeders of welsh ponies should cut down, the good, the bad and the ugly. Worth a look.
Without repeating what was said, for me the main point is of course there are too many ponies being bred, but its still not easy to find what you want when you go looking for youngstock of top quality suitable to ride. So, breeders of quality useful stock must be encouraged to keep going. As you rightly said, phylberns, we will have a massive void, if not careful. No longer is it affordable to many people to breed as a hobby and I do worry that a whole generation of dedicated breeders who have provided us riding people with useful stock for so long, will soon become too old to carry on.
Thank you for your kind comments about Maria. We are delighted with her!

I think often it is to do with advertising, I know of a nice, but not truely outstanding sec B stallion that is being used quite a bit, you cannot go anywhere without seeing his photo! ETA: Just out of curiosity I've just tried to find a picture of your boy. So far no luck! When I ask google for your stud name (hopefully it's the right one!) it comes up with an arabian stud in Austrlia... May be worth adding a photo to allhorsepedigree or something

As a mare owner, the price of the stud fee is not a determing factor in chosing a stallion for me. I breed Connies so they vary from £250 to £500, but the travel costs, keep fees, vet fees, and then associated registration costs DNA & Microchip, make up the other £500 to £1000 (if you are unlucky)! But before i decide if i am going to put my mare in foal, I have to have room for the resulting pony to reside with me until i can sell it. I think you are at the end of a chain, just like in the housing market, that has slowed up dramatically. Youngstock are not selling as quickly as in previous years and so breeders and mare owners have had to cut back to keep their numbers in residence managable. I'm sure the lack of interest is not a reflection of value for money for your stallion.

Lowerstone, I think you will have the last laugh. 2 Annandale ponies qualified in the 13hh'ers this week. Both coping, in fact thriving in the most terrible conditions! There must be something in this - oh yes, breeding!!

I couldnt agree more bizzylizzy! its not just the cost of the stud fee you also have to think what if? ? what if something went wrong ?
An example this year we sadly lost our mare she foaled fine and then sadly slipped fell heavy and broke her leg resulting in having to be pts 3 hours after foaling leaving us with an orphan foal this then resulted in buying him subsitute coloustrum and mares milk replacer. tiny rugs to keep him warm, 1 hourly feeds 24 hours a day, we ended up loosing him at 7 days, even though he had been seen by the vet on 3 seperate days!
Call out fees X 4 two of which were a bank holiday Examination of the pain pain killers 3 examinations of the foal different drugs that he needed and drips. I know that was ^ an exceptional case and very heartbraking for us!
We didnt have a stud fee as we have our own stallion. but it makes you think. Swabbing fees Stud fee Keep fee travelling to and from stallion bloodtest/scannning feed matainence of a broodmare and do you have the facilities to run said foal on till you can find him/her a suitable home you mare having over a year out of work
Its not that people are mad they are being sensible! x

I don't think Lowerstone is saying people are mad for not breeding. Often sensible reasons - as you point out. But for those that do, its strange when a really proven stallion isn't used

and after all that said no one wants to pay a fair price for our ponies they all want them for peanuts when youve had to get them into this world in one piece then !!!!!!! get them to weaning without injury and blemish !!!! then if they dont sell as weaners you have to keep them till they are older and if you keep them to they are 3 then all you are offered is £300 !!! well i wish some one would let me into the secret of HOW TO KEEP A PONY OR HORSE FOR THAT FOR 3 YEARS!!! cos i cant !! we breed for a hobby not a bussiness but it would be so nice to be appriciated for what we breed and show ,ours cost just the same as yours that youve just sold to rob us of ours !!!!!! SO SORRY TO RANT but it makes me so cross xxx

Sorry dont get the last bit, I certainly havent robed anyone! We keep our stallions for our own use if we get a visiting mare,to me that is a bonus and goes towards his keep.We so far have not bothered to sale foals we like to run them on until they are 3yrs. Again if someone phones looking for something I try and help.We find being in the south west getting people to come an look a big problem, which is why in the pst we have taken ponies to Fayre Oakes. So please dont be cross with me!

Lowerstone - we can do a piece on the success of your stud for our native-pony.com website if you would like? It averages 100 hits a day and we are always looking for stories for it! You can email me on celeste_999@hotmail.co.uk if you would like to discuss further. Check it out too. Annandale Darcy is lovely - he is not far from us in Cornwall - he has qualified in the ShP lead rein too last week!
