My mare was covered by my colt about 2 weeks ago after coming back into season after our first failed attempt. She's squirting at him again this weekend so I'm wondering if I should see whether she will stand for him. I know I could get the vet out to scan her but I'm trying to avoid increasing my vet's bill anymore as I have a few vaccinations due next month. Has anyone had a mare who comes into season more frequently than normal and is there a way of telling when a true season is occurring - it may be that we have our timing totally off and, although she has stood for him each time, maybe she's having a false cycle at times. Help appreciated. confused.com! ETA - he has been very good at accepting when the time isn't right and she's been very good at teaching him some manners - I just don't want the poor wee soul to get all excited if he's not going to get any!

I have a mare that would cycle all year round! I have to regumate her to get her in foal, but even 4 weeks before she was due to drop this years foal she spied him in the stable and spread her legs, squatted and squirted. Tart!
The only way to see if it's a proper cycle and she is ovulating is a scan I think

I had a mare who came in to season and stood for stallion while in foal so it's worth getting her scanned

Thanks guys. I think I'll let her have one more go around the time she should be in season properly and let nature takes it course this year. I'll be more organised next year and get her scanned early in the season so I know what's what. As I say, this year is about teaching the wee man what it's all about and she's doing that job very well. He was led past her yesterday when she was tied up squirting at him and he looked but didn't try to get to her.

One of our fell mares came back in season won't let the boy cover vet came scanned she is in foal and thats why she won't accept him. worth getting your mare scanned if she won't let him cover. Better to know than wait 11mths wondering if she is in foal or not.
