Someone asked me my opinion of the value of their foal which they wish to sell, I declined to comment as I've never been involved in breeding (to be honest and no offence intended, no interest on my part!) and so I have no idea where to start.
Had a look on here and Horsequest for some ideas having got thinking about this - prices seem to hugely vary from hundreds to several thousands!
How do you personally value a foal for sale - is the value of the sire, dam, and other progeny factored in? Does the stud fee impact how much you would ask? It seems such a tough one, as much as we love any horse everyone of course thinks something they have bred is the most special horse in the world, understandably!

To be honest I think anyone that breeds at the moment should ONLY breed if they are happy to keep their foals! X

The way I work it, is by thinking about what I would be happy to accept to cover my costs and make some profit! And what type of home it is. I only breed small time, 1 a year usually, but for next year I have a couple in foal. But I often get people ringing to see if I have any of his stock for sale so selling them is never a problem. This years colt is sold.
I breed for fun and to produce quality cobs. And have the space to run them on if they don't sell, but they always do! I am realistic in my prices at the minute, and also it's hard when people see gypsy cob colts up for £250 and then wonder why I am asking over a grand. To a good show home where I knew they would be shown I would be more flexible on the price.

I have a friend who sets her prices according to the cars driven by the prospective purchasers...the more expensive the model the higher the price of the horse ;D

Must admit I always go in the workaday practical car if I can just in case people do this! I don't do it to potential buyers that come here though - usually price discussed on the phone first anyway.
