My 25 day old foal suffered choke for the second time yesterday. After 4 hours of us thinking it had cleared, he still had not suckled so the vet was keen to see him for an endoscopy. Fortunately, just as were ready to try and load him and his mum up (the thought of which was panicking me alone), he strted to drink and keep it down! Phew! The vet still raised concerns that we should take him next week for an endoscopy to be sure that there is not a problem with his throat - as choke in such a young foal is rare and it has now happened twice!! Anywa, after watching very carefully, it has been discovered that he klikes a munch on his paper bedding!! :-( Now we think that this is probabily the culprit! The question is, what bedding do i use now? i have just emptied his bedroom and am off to the shop to get a replacemnet but i dont know what to get! The vet suggested that straw would do less damage if eaten, but my mare will cough on straw so its not really an option. ...im thinjing shavings....but course or fluffy? Fluffy hes more likely to want to eat, but then the coarse, if he does eat will probabily cause damage! PLEASE HELP!!! Has anybody experienced this before? ? Thanks :-)
