I'm just weaning my colt of his mum now he's 6 months. Foal is being a little sh1t now and mums fed up. But shes still heavly bagged up and leaking milk. Can anyone please tell how long this will last for as i'm worried about mastitus (Cant spell) and whats the best way to help her dry up please. My last mare just dried up really well naturally, but this mares rather full. Thank youin advance ;D

My mare dried up quite quickly - week or two? Sorry can't remember exactly as it was 5 years ago. Seem to remember though that I was advised not to have her on lush grazing and put her on a well grazed paddock.

Yes, keep the grazing to an absolute minimum and no protein feed - mine have mostly taken from 3 days to a week to stop leaking and for the bag to become more comfortable - I assume you mean you have totally separated them now?

are you going to breed next year? If so then milk her a bit each day, drain through a fine sieve and freeze in ice cube trays, once frozen you can store in bags. Always good to have a back up, obviously reduce the amount you take each day. Also have you considered gelding him prior to gelding?
good luck

When I wean I limit the mares water intake for the first day and don't give any hard feed at all, also limit her forage. You could maybe try weaning gradually and see if that helps?
