Hi My mare and foal were weaned 2 weeks ago. I kept mare off grass for the first week. This week she has had an hour or 2 on grass (she gets turnout in a barn all day). Yesterday she stayed on grass abit longer and now her udders are swollen and abit warm to touch. I wondered if this is normal or could be be the start of an infection. The advise I have had from my yard owner is to cut out her feed and just give her hay and abit of chop. What do you guys think?

I would cut out all feed and just turn her out so she can keep moving, thats what i've always done and have never had a problem

Thank you, I will not feed her anything other than hay until the swelling has reduced.

When we used to wean the foals. The mares stayed out together in the field and the foals all were stabled together. The mares udders soon went down. I think keeping them stabled just makes their udders fill up and get warm which could bring on infection such as mastitus. Cut out her feed and just feed hay for a while until her udder has dried up.

Get some vinegar and put that on her udders :-)

Don't touch her udder at all, leave her out with just hay to eat.

Try and keep her moving, turn out or even if you have a horse walker and let her go round on walk.

The swelling has gone down considerably. I cut all had feed out and let her move around as much as possible. I have been hacking her aswell. We seem to be getting there. Thanks for your advise
