BLIND GLEN OF IMAAL TERRIERSFrom DNA testing so far, about half the Glen population carries the gene mutation responsible for the blinding disorder GPRA-crd3 (generalised progressive retinal atrophy - cone rod dysplasia 3). For a Glen to have crd3 and eventually go blind, it has to have 2 copies of the gene mutation (one from each parent). If you are thinking of buying a Glen pup and want to be confident that your puppy will not go blind as a result of crd3, you should seek out a breeder who has used a dog and bit*h that have been DNA tested for crd3 - and at least one parent MUST be tested CLEAR (or be HEREDITARY CLEAR). This must be a clear DNA test ( not an "Unaffected" EYE test). The DNA test requires a blood sample to be sent to a lab in the USA or Germany. (An eye test is carried out by a certified ophthalmologist - eye vet - looking into the eye in a darkened room). KC registration is NOT a guarantee that the sire and dam of a Glen litter has been tested for crd3.If you know the full kennel names of the parents, you can check to see whether or not they have been DNA tested for crd3: www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/3384 - this page links to lists of DNA tested CLEAR, CARRIER and AFFECTED Glens. You can check ALL the health screeing results of an individual dog here: www.the-kennel-club.org.uk/services/public/mateselect/test/Default.aspxJust type in the full kennel name of an individual dog and click on the arrow ...

DNA TESTING FOR CRD3Glen breeders should know the crd3 status of both the sire and dam BEFORE mating, to ensure that it is a SAFE mating i.e. a mating that will not produce puppies that are at risk of developing crd3. UNtested = UNsafe! PUPPY BUYERS - If you are not able to check the DNA status of the parents on the KC website, please ask to see the DNA test certificates of BOTH parents - they will be either from Optigen or Bochum. At least one parent MUST be CLEAR (+ / +). Breeders can also download and print off the individual Health Test Pedigree (PDF) of each parent from the KC website. Val Tiller (Foxbarton Border Collies) holds two ( all breeds) Optigen (USA) DNA testing sessions a year - in February and September. From Val: " Optigen are offering 30% discount off DNA tests, paid for online, at Val Tiller's next Optigen 20/20 Clinic, on Tuesday, 5th February, in Epsom, Surrey. Glens are invited to be DNA tested for crd3-PRA. Clients may attend the clinic in person, or be Postal Participants. Contact Val Tiller direct for further details and to book places, asap, as she is away from 8th-15th January. E-mail: val.tiller@talk21.com or Tel: (01372) 273597." Alternatively, please contact Mrs Jean Rogers - Email: jean@e-f-g.co.uk or Tel: 01205 820791 - for details of Bochum (Germany) testing.
