So sorry for your loss!! I had a mare foal her first foal with a cleft pallet, she's had 4 foals since and all have been fine.
What is Chernobyl ?

In Russia, so the radioactivity released floated over us and we couldn't eat upland lamb for a bit.

I think it was only last year that the final few farms in Wales got the all clear to sell lamb again.

Dalak..are you near Llandysul??? there's been 2 cases of EHV-1 there..both mares were full term and foaled dead foals....don't know if EHV-1 can cause those types of deformities, but might be worth investigating!
