I've now got a coloured cob yearling, He'll do in hand showing so whos best to register with? Chaps or bspa?
Also I'm starting a traditional cob stud to start breeding in 3-4yrs, only one of two foals a time before anyone jumps down my throat saying I shouldn't, and I want to register my prefix now because he doesn't have a passport yet I want him putting in our studs name but I can't think of any prefix's, is there a list of available ones?

Central Prefix Register oversees prefixes for all stud books. They are for those you've bred yourself though, not those bought in.

You would be best advised to register your new prefix with CHAPS and BSPA - firstly look on the CPR Website to make sure that your choice is not already in use. Contact Gina Dent, the very helpful Secretary at the CPR (she is available on certain days, check that on the website, too). You cannot duplicate a prefix which is currently in use with ANY Breed Society - Gina will advise you on this. When you first register your youngster, you will pay a one-off Prefix registration fee, too, which will safeguard it from anyone else using it. As Sarah says, you cannot simply put your prefix on to an animal which was bred by someone else. Eg. not like in KC reg dogs which seem to carry numerous prefixes and suffixes. As explained, Gina at CPR will be the best person to help you with this.

I questioned it but this person has done this and said because it had no passport & no name that they could & they have?

Dont know who told you this but they are wrong. BSPA and chaps will only allow you prefixes registered to you to be used on bred stock and not on something you have just bought
there used to be a way around it but it cannot be done now so maybe the person you spoke to did it several years ago.
Prefixes denote the breeder and not the person showing or owning the animal. For the same reason you cannot remove a prefix from an animal though some societies allow a 'compeitition name' particularly for those who do not have verified breeding

p.s if you need a passport for the pony it is cheaper to get one via chaps or bspa than it is to get one with a generic society because you then have to pay for overstamping as well.

yes u cant add a prefix on a pony u have not bred, otherwise we would all be changing names. also make sure you look into how much it will cost you to grade him as a stallion as after him being 3 u cant show him with out a license, and agree above y has he not got a passport yet or micro chipped, xx

He is microchipped & he had the papers ready for the passport but lost them, I said i'd get it done as I have the vets doing their Vaccs in a week, he's being registered & passorted with Chaps & he'll be licenced when he's 3/4 depending on his results and whether we keep him entire or gelded etc

I suggest that you get him out to a few evaluations with CHAPS especially if you have no known breeding. This will help you to decide whether to put him forward for grading. Also entering him in some youngstock classes and type will help prepare him for his big day. Also suggest that you contact the CHAPS grading officer (contact details are on the CHAPS website) and ask her for a list of judges that are graders so that you can enter some classes under them to get some feedback on their opinion of your young horse with regards to his type/stallion potential.
