You first need to remedy the reason for him loosing condition, once this has been achieved then put on good grass if possible, failing this plenty of bulk rather than high protein, beware of lots of sugary content as it can lead to laminitis. You have not mentioned if ridden or inhand, if ridden then lots of slow work to build up fitness so you have layers of muscle rather than layers of fat. Try to think of long term against immediate results and your boy will benefit and both look and go better. good luck

He mainly does in hand but he does getting ridden at home . Although he is an I.d cross he isn't a very good doer so not sure if all this change in weather has just took the toll on him . We have got 3 fields with absolutely fantastic grazing but for some reason the farmer won't let us use it so having to feed him just keep bit of condition on and this was what I was wondering what feed people recommend to help him xxx

ok so a cheap way would be to pull grass from hedgerows and put into nets. I'm assuming that he lives in then, make certain you are feeding the best quality hay or hayledge and lots of clean water.
Boiled barley and linseed will add covering, old fashioned but warming and proven. Try to improve fitness, strapping will also improve muscle tone and shape. Improving fitness will help to stop any dropping off tendencies. Plus if he feels a bit chilly at night put on a lightweight rug.
