Dotty has, within the last 2 days, got brand new hobby! ... RIPPING HIS RUGS! I have no idea what's started this as he's never done it in 3 years and I have checked plenty of times that he's not too hot. Do you have any ideas on why he's suddenly started? And also how I could stop it? He is grabbing the chest area and tearing it.. Any help appreciated.. Thanks. X

I had a problem with this but not of a horse ripping his own rugs but ripping his field mates rugs! He never liked our section B to have a rug on goodness knows how many turn out rugs we went through was always glad when it was warmer and no rugs were necessary. Never did work out how to stop him.

If your boy is entire, it might be the smell of his rugs, we have found with our A stallion he will always rip a new rug, or one that's been on another pony, so try spraying it liberally inside & out with febreeze - that masks any other smell.
Then liberally spray the buckles/front or wherever he grabs with crib-box/stop or any other similar product (hold your breath when u spray cos not a nice taste!). You may have to repeat every couple of days. That will def stop him.
We also spray bandages if leaving on in the stable (i.e. the night before a show), and have used on foot poultices to stop naughty horses taking them off before they have chance to work!!

Some little monster in the field has riped charlies, just had it repaired will see how long it lasts, no soultuon here unfortunatly though the hairspray idea is brill we know how vile it tastes when we accidently get a gob full ourselves !

You can buy an anti rig ripping neck cradle to stop them ripping rugs in the stable.
