Does anyone have any good ideas on how to teach a little one to jump on to their pony. His legs are still a bit short to reach the stirrups but he is desperate to get on himself without a mounting step especially during games.

Its best done when the pony is moving because then the forward motion helps you fling your legs backwards and up while holding on to the mane at the withers , but its not necessarily good for the pony's back and the pony may get confused about standing still for mounting at other times.

One of the top producers of children's ponies used to teach them to put their knee in the stirrup!!!

Is he old enough to learn to vault on?
My daughter suprised me yesterday by being able to get on using her stirrup by herself, she's just turned 6, and has a tuck in her stirrup, she just faces her ponies head held on to the stirrup, put her foot in. And then bounced and pulled herself up. Her sister was holding stirrup down other side as I didn't want her to hurt ponies back,

My almost 3 year old son nearly gave me a heart attack by climbing up his shetland's tail last weekend. I am NOT recommending this, and he was firmly told off, but I did find it quite hard not to smile, it was quite enterprising and Hamish didn't complain at all, bless him. It will not be happening again, though.
