Our girl has had a pretty bad past, beaten and abused etc and has a hard time trusting. We have restarted her ridden work and although slightly spooky in walk she is getting better. The main issue is in asking her to go forward into trot, she will launch herself forward and pick up speed until she is cantering and it takes a bit to calm her and slow her down. Its not lack of understanding as she was reschooled a few yrs ago, tack and back are fine. She just seems to panic as soon as you ask for her to go forward. Any advice on helping her overcome this would be fab, thank you

Have you had her teeth checked?

Teeth were done 3 months ago when we got her.

find a different aid that will get her to trot, keep away from the ones that make her panic. It is a possibility that she has been so badly affected that she should not be worked again, or maybe just used for gentle hacking.

She was being worked by her last owners and was schooling/hacking/jumping, but the daughter fell off and refused to get back on her so she sat in a field for 2 yrs and was maybe ridden a handful of times over the 2 yrs, but once she settled she was fine.

sounds like she needs re-braking then. Ride in an enclosed area so you can use to fence for as brake rather than her mouth, every time she speeds up put onto a circle so she is easier to control and balance. Put on soothing music with a slow 2 time or 4 time rhythm. Try to establish trot for a few strides at a time. School in walk using turns and halts, half-halts and some lateral work to build up trust from her to you and you to her. Start doing 10 to 13 minutes at a time and building up to half an hour interspersed by hacking in walk only. once she is relaxed then start on trot. Don't try to trot on a hack until you have established a good braking system.
good luck
