So after a 4 year break to have my daughter I've given in and brought another sec D ! He needs a good trim but I'm never 100% sure how short his mane and tail should be any photos as examples would be really handy. He is a very chunky gelding.
Also I need to sort a new saddle will be showing and doing some workers What saddles have people got on their Ds?
Thanks in advance x

Hi, I have a 2 year old section D Hes abit of an odd ball at the moment, very 'bum high'. His mane we have at about 6 inches long perhaps abit longer, but looking natural and his tail is just about at his hocks, but again looking natural Also Ive trimmed his bushy beard and wiskers off for when we was showing Hope that helps (Im a total amature btw)

Our sec d has a fairly long mane compared to the other d's we compete against. It shows about half the neck if that makes sense. I think some must thin thiers too where as I leave mine thick. Take into consideration what his neck is built like. If its chunky with could topline they can get away with longer manes whereas if its not well built then shorter mane will help give the illusion of more. If you go onto a good photography site such as equinational you can get some inspiration! My d's tail his exactly half way between his hocks and his fetlocks and cut to look natural. Never cut straight across. I also dont touch the top of his tail where as some do. I use a tiny bit of gel and a rubber tailbandage whilst travelling to keep it smooth abd neat.
As for saddle I like native pony saddles. The working hunter fenn or a straight cut gp sienna are my favourite.

Thanks for your replies I've got cracking on trimming him and looking 100% better however getting a saddle to fit is a whole new thing! So frustrating x

It's difficult to recommend a saddle for a Sec D.
You could have a ring full of them and they'd all be different shapes and sizes

Michael Davis of Pony, Cob and Horse Saddles will be able to sort out a saddle for you, he can adapt a design to make sure it suits you and your horse perfectly and they are soft flocked so are really comfy for horse and rider too.
