my daughter has had to beg and borrow rides since our loan pony went back but is currently riding a gorgeous sec B very confidently off the lead rein, fab! I can do no more of that running business. tips , now, on how to get her to keep her hands down and lose the washing line reins readily accepted. have hope we will be on hunt for first Ridden next year so winter of riding coaching ahead if us. our dream is not yet defeated!

put her on a lunge, making certain that the pony is quiet and confident with being lunged. make a loop of plaiting thread on the rings on the front of her saddle that will guide the height of her hands, it will also give her confidence. Make certain whatever you use will snap if she falls off and gets her foot caught as you do not want her to get dragged, don't forget to keep thumbs on top! I also remember having to hold a plastic cup of water when riding, if you moved your hands you got wet! Whatever you do please make riding fun for your little girl

I remember being taught ''pretend the reins are a small bird, too soft and it will fly away, too tight and you will squash it''.....ewwwwwwwwww!!
Agree totally with the above and maybe add in either a knot or an elastic band to the reins at the right length to give her a guide of where to hold

Echo the above, something to just remind her when her hands bounce up. I used a thin loop on the D's and she popped a finger under My little girl has just mastered it after lots of lunge work without reins for balance without hanging on. We had a lot of fun though . Good luck!

Take her hunting, there'll be no washing line reins after a day in the field

I find a lot of young riders ride with their hands up to balance themselves.
