I have just started backing a recently bought irish draught. She is completely unreactive!!! Voice commands, body language, flinging ropes, cracking lunge whip, hitting lunge whip. Nothing!!! I am experienced. Broken in 10+ horses/ stubborn ponies. But I have no where to start with this mare. Baught her as she was so placid. Starting to think she is too placid!!! Not a bad bone in her body. any help gratefully recieved.

how strange you think with the crack of a lunge whip she may at least go forward or bonkers!!perhaps only a suggestion you could try a bit in hand using voice commands and then she may get the gist??walk ,stand, trot ??Long reining ??She cant be totally unresponsive can she ??

Try starting with another person, leading first till she gets the idea, then off the lead with person at the side, then finally on her own...try some monty roberts groundwork, helps to get her centred on you before you start asking her stuff. You need to get her responsive to you on the ground when you are handling her generally before anything else.Make sure you reward even the slightest response with lots of positive praise, and lots of repetition. Good luck!

Her groundwork is ecxellent. Although she does not trotin hand. Laazy beast. Yesterday I tried a plastic bag at the end of lunge. Worked really well. Dont think I am going to get canter for a long while but deffinately a step in the right direction. It was very wierd. Have never had to crack a whip on their bum before. Trying again today. Fingers crossed all will go as smoothly as yesterday
