Have started backing my three year old, he is so stubborn and will plant his feet and not move, when I ask him to go forward he will go backwards, if you use a whip it makes him worse and I don't want to have to be like that with him. He goes by voice command on lunge and I use my voice a lot when riding him, we are only on about the 4th time on him but any advice would be great. Have over 10 years experience and backed and schooled many horses but I'm not sure what to try next on this one! Help!!!

Check saddle and back first job as something might be pinching when you sit on then long reining and lunging whilst someone is on board to get him use to going forward with weight on, following another horse. I wouldn't suggest smacking him as you want to make it all a nice positive experience :-)

LOL So sorry but I have exactly the same trouble with my three year old ! However help is at hand. I ride with a lead rope in my hand, when she plants I gently flick her on her shoulder with the rope continuously. At first she moved after a while now she moves off within seconds. The idea is to annoy them, then they have the attitude I am not staying here with that going on.

It's maybe a daft question but have u had someone lead u on her? Then do the off the lead rein following? Just for a day...... Although I had this with a mare I'm backing this morning and I just made her turn when she planted her feet, there's only so far they can go with turning their head before they lose balance and it's either move their feet or fall over, after 10 minutes of playing this game she ended up giving up and doing as she was asked

What about trying a bit of long reining? We broke our pony last year and we found him much more responsive when we long reined him first. We no longer need to long rein and he is very responsive to voice commands.

It may be that he's not yet ready mentally for backing. I'd leave it for now and try again in the spring
