I always thought that trimming and pulling Dartmoors, Shetlands and Highlands was a big no. I am really surprised at the amount of ponies that have had manes and tails pulled - this is including Shetlands and Dartmoors. I know that some people show their Dartmoors as Show Ponies too but I just think it looks so wrong pulling the manes short enough to plait. I have even seen Highlands with make up on.

Its never good to have natives too scruffy either, i have connemaras and i do trim whiskers and eyes as you dont want him looking like a spider! We also oil him and put make up on him for the shows, as ling as its subtle, it enhances the natural look! I leave tail and manes though, the longer the better

You will be marked down if you pull a connes tail under proper panel judges, its a strict no no in Connemara breed rules. They can be tidied but never over much - I suppose it depends what level they are shown at and which panel judges are judging - but true breed judges will penalise I'm sure.

Someone told me to 'trim' my Dales. No chance!! He never even had a whisker trimmed :-)

Jane, we show at County level, u have never taken a scissor to Amy of our Natives but I was shocked to see how many have, I have to say a Shetland with a pulled name looks hideous and a Dartmoor with a pulled tail and mane too. It was the Highland that certainly had make up on and it wasn't subtle in any way. I looked up the breed standard for Dartmoors and your not even to trim a whisker, au natural as possible. If they are so keen to do these things, maybe they have the wrong breed?? Sent from my HTC Wildfire S A510e using proboards

Am reading this with interest as just got a little dartie fr for my daughter, anyone any idea what clip will be ok to do, pony is very sweaty after 20 mins work, she's going to be going to shows over winter, the breed society says can be clipped if ridden but what clip is best for the pony and the show ring? thanks!

I think for a first ridden a bib clip should be enough and some old fashioned judges do prefer as little as possible to be taken off but would do it as soon as possible to avoid lines at the beginning of next season.

Its incorrect to show them trimmed and pulled but keeping them neat and shaped is no problem
