Hi I have recently bought a yearling and I am wanting to show her in hand next year as a two yr old. What bits do people tend to use? What process do you take? She is a warmblood type and is pretty well handled. Thanks

Initially, I just put a little black nylon bit in my boy for showing in hand for the first year and at the start of the second year but then he was running away with me and it wasn't enough so he has a little brass bit with nugget in the middle. He mouthed up fine in both of the bits. He is a Oldenburg/TB. Good luck :-)

Must admit I hate those straight hard nylon ones and found my ponies seem to as well! Now I use a double jointed snaffle of some sort and find they go much better in one of those. You still need to mouth them properly and teach them what you expect when using a bit of course, not just stick it in and expect them to know it all.

Ok thanks, at her age how do you teach her what you want from a bit? Sorry to sound thick x

I start with them in the box, and having let them get used to having the bit in without doing anything with it, start by gently vibrating one rein (you need on on each side at this point, but you can hold them under the neck), while standing by the head, until they turn their head towards that rein. Release pressure on the rein and praise. Repeat for the other side. Of course when showing in hand you won't use two reins, but I think it gets them used to pressure from the bit for when you ride. For in hand, I prefer a coupling with equal pressure on each side and a ring midway to attach the lead rein, and start in the box leading round, putting a light pressure on both sides equally and saying whoa, or whatever word they're used to in a halter or headcollar. Stop yourself when you do so, then when they halt, relax the pressure and praise. Move outside when you think ready.
