Hi, I have a rising 5 shetland who is currently being brought on by a fabulous jockey, she is working very well and forward in walk and trot but seems unable to grasp the concept of canter. She will canter on the lunge but when asked when ridden just trots faster and faster and may throw the odd buck in there. Are there any hints or tips we could use to encourage her? Many thanks in advance Sent from my GT-N7105 using proboards

all horses and ponies have a favoured stride, some trot and some canter. When you lunge teach walk to canter and once perfected try under saddle, make certain when you canter on the lunge from trot that you do not allow your pony to run into canter. Lunge with your jockey on top introducing the leg aides If out hacking try asking for canter on an up hill terrain. Don't be afraid to use a loud voice aide and continue using until canter transition is established.
good luck

We normally teach canter in a big open field with other ponies and only move to cantering in the arena area once the pony has learned the aids in the field.

Have you tried putting a pole /small jump on the corner and asking for canter as pony goes over the pole . Agree with Nici though much easier to get them cantering in an open field . Not sure how old the jockey is but make sure they are not tensing up as they ask for canter . My daughter used to tense her hands up on the reins and her legs used to go rigid so her shettie would buck into canter . They got it eventually though . Good luck

Thanks for all ypur replies everyone, weve taken right back a step and weve been learning walk to canter. Shes not foot perfect yet but shes picking it up very nicely! Her jockey has just been schooling her in walk and trot, and doing a fantastic job. Her favoured gait is definately trot! Yes Nici I think a good blast would really open her up and get her legs in gear! Its almost like she struggles to balance and get her legs in the right place! Itll come though, theres no rush for her Sent from my GT-N7105 using proboards
