Hi, I am looking for some advice on which bit to try........I recently purchased a 10yo mare she had been out of work for some years due to being a broodmare. when we purchased her, the previous owners said she was strong to ride, got her home brought her back into work, we started of on a sweet iron lozenger snaffle but due to her having a big fleshy tonge she disliked it. We then tried a happy mouth, straight bar loop ring which she was much better in except when she gets full of her self then decides to run through the bit!!! On the off chance I tried her in the mullen mouth Pelham and she loves it but as she had never done any showing I'd like to start her off in some novice classes but obviously we can compete using a Pelham. She had her teeth done as soon as I brought her. Any advice/info is greatly revived. thanks

Have you seen the bombers happy tongue bit? Im trying to think along the same lines as the mullen pelham she likes but in snaffle form. The happy tongue is straight bar with a medium forward cut port, designed for horses with fleshy toungues. I would look at eggbutt sides as she obviously likes the stability of the pelham. They are expensive but can be trialled first.
Thier is also a magic snaffle. Very thin with a small port , again good for fleshy tongues but ive only seen them in a loose ring style.
Bits are just a case of trial and error really. Coupled with good schooling.

You can ride a novice in a Pelham under PUK rules - look out for these classes, a few are running within BSPS and NCPA schedules over the winter. I was unaware of this rule until I saw a 2nd place rode in a Pelham in a really strong large breeds M&M class where the large majority where in snaffles.

if you look at the scheduals of some shows they allow pelhams and doubles in novice classes, i know this is the case for equifest and PUK. depends on the show. i ave a 6yrold that has the same issue. hates and disrespects the snaffel, i do the home produced, restricted and open classes and the novice at the shows mentioned above. i hve found that she gets placed just as high in the non novice as she does in the novice. make a restricted or home produed class if she wont wear a snaffle
