I am wondering how people manage to it without the horses' feet being compacted with ice? I saw a lovely photo on this site (can't remember where) of someone cantering on the snow and also in the paper saw a whole string of race horses being exercised in the show. In the past when I have tried it never got very far and I put vaseline in the feet as I heard that was a good measure but it didn't seem to work.
Any other tips?

I wouldnt. When the snow compacts in their feet they end up walking on a 4" platform of ice! Very dangerous!!

If you put LOADS of vaseline in their hoofs then you can ride in the snow. My friend has a nutter of a heavy weight cob that needs to be ridden everyday but the indoor school was booked up with lessons today, so my riding teacher told her to put vaseline in her hoofs and it worked! You really need to put a lot in though! lol

You can vaseline their hooves but if their feet are unshod and well trimmed the snow tends to flick out of their feet rather than ball up. We would never ride our shod horses in the snow but the unshod ones seem to be fine.

i personally wouldnt ride in the snow or ice, we know ourselves how hard it is to keep on your feet, im sure its the same for the horses as well, i would never forgive myself if one of mine slipped and hurt themselves badly
