Is there a difference in how you prepare a native for the show ring as opposed to a traditional. I had a lesson today and we agreed between us that my coloured is very much a native rather than a trad. Does this mean I shouldn't fluff her feather up as much - I know some natives seem to have a fair bit of feather, but others only have a small amount like welsh ponies. My girl has lost a bit of hers in the mud, so I'm glad she will be presented as a native instead of a trad, but I'm wondering if there is anything that I should prepare differently.

I trim my native more, I do ears/beard/whiskers/mane etc. I know some people with traditionals leave their manes really long and don't trim their beards off but everyone does it differently. I think it's up to you to trim what looks best for your pony but I try and trim my pony like I would a welsh (minus the really short tail) because she is a welsh PB. Id go and look at some pictures

My problem is that she's a hairy native type (ie Fell) so should I turn her out in a similar way to them (ie no trimming!)

im new to all this ...if ive not updated my advert for 14 days then i do why av you blocked me...ive updated my photos for a request This isn't the section to discuss this but since you've asked, I will answer. You were clearly warned about bumping your advert and did it more than once. If you post a reply to a question, that is perfectly acceptable but counts as a bump so you should not bump it again until 14 days afterwards - quite logical when you think about it. Your reply brings your advert to the top and therefore it should not be brought back to the top again until another 14 days have passed. The mods are fed up spending so much time on having to edit the adverts of people who either don't read the rules or think they are above them, and we did warn that we were going to get tougher.

Guestless, I think it would be easier if you posted a picture but by the sounds of it, your pony would probably just look like a trad without trimming. Natives only have feather from the fetlock rather than the knee as a trad would but fells do have more like you say. Feathers on natives are generally finer so you may get away with not much trimming. I would take the pony out under a coloured judge and ask for their opinion. Many trads have made better natives with a little trimming!! Good Luck

It was a coloured judge I had my lesson from pigsear. I think it is her build more than her hair that made us think she is native-type. She's chunky, but not as chunky as the traditionals and probably slightly leggier. She has decent feather but has lost quite a bit in the mud over winter (she lives out) and has a fairly fine mane. Will see if I have any pics later from home but I haven't taken one of her in ages.

Then just trim up and see how she looks, it will grow back if it looks not right. My aunt has a coloured kept as a trad but it has more knee action than I like to see and in my opinion would be better as a native. My chunky boy just couldnt be mistaken for a native!!!

My mare is a native, she is pretty headed and now toning up is shaped more like a heavy section D, she has fine hair down from her knee but not course and silky feathers which cover top of her hoof but not more than that, she is middle boned but has good limbs not really thick limbs, she moves quite light and bouncy on her feet, she also has a well set tail on muscled quarters, and is not short in the back and quarters, alot of her leg hair is still winter coat at present and on pictures its alot finer in the summer, I am leaving her mane long, though have pulled them ends slightly and her tail is being grown down but if gets very long i will taper the ends like a welsh cob and i will tidy her jaw line. Traditionals ( in my opnion) have corser bigger bone, a heavier action and appley bottoms, if you did a silohette of mine she is like a good heavy section d type mare.
