help - when i ride my feet ALWAYS turn outwards, and when i try and make them straight forwards, it doesn't come naturally and my toes tend to go down trying to keep them like that (although i have a feeling it might be cos my stirrups are too long!) it looks really bad and i have no idea how to get them straight without concentrating on it so hard my riding goes to pieces! i have been riding for about 13 of my 15 years, and i was taught by my grandad who learnt to ride in about 1930-something, and although i had lesson when i was about 6, and after a break resumed them for about 2 years when i was 9-11, i still ride a bit like him. i've attached some vids of me riding in one of our fields, but Kookie is a little bit hyper so our style leaves quite a bit to be desired! lol ignore my dad telling me it was 'very good' - he doesn't see me canter much - he's always painting/cleaning/polishing his tractors!

I am 22, and have been riding since i was 7, have had lessons of various ppl and have particularly one foot/toe that likes to point out? have you tried riding without stirrups as this is what i am doing at the mo? I def make sure the lenght of you stirrup is ok as i was riding a bit to long and sice taking them up a whole its much easier to keep them toe's forward?

Definatley take your stirrups up a bit and dont know if its just the video but they look odd lengths!! The good news is that if your toes are pointing out that generally means your not gripping with your knees which is good!! Once you shorten your stirrups it might happen naturally but I would say rather than concentrate on your feet work on the pressure point on your calf. If the toes are pointing out the pressure must be coming from the back of your calf, try to get a feel for pushing with the inside of your leg not the back! Once you get a feel for it you will know!! You should try and get some lessons or even just a helper on the floor to remind you! You are a nice jockey and we all have a bad habit! Hope that makes sense - good luck!

Ha ha - never mind, try and get someone on the floor when you are riding though even if they are not an instructor!

Is there any way you could get a weekend or evening job to earn the money for some lessons? Even if you could only afford maybe one a month, you would get so much out of it.

hiya i think your stirrups look a tad too long, especialy for cantering in a field, could you try taking your stirrups up afew holes and work on your forward seat? get up out the saddle and crouch forward, jockey style! shorten your stirrups even more if you find it hard to balance. also try riding standing straight up out the saddle, this wil get the weight down the back of your leg and into your heel. also work without stirrups doing various exerices such as 3 loop serpentines and firgues of eights in trot. these should all improve your leg position in general. think about riding with your toes turned in to keep them from pointing out! i used to ride with my toes out as a teenager especialy over jumps, but as my position developed and my riding improved i stopped doing it . your pony is lovelty and your riding is lovely so dont get too down about it!
regarding lessons, could you join your local pony club? i know at my branch once we had joined up the rallies (group lessons) were free. also working towards your PC tests would give you goals to work on so that your riding keeps improving.
if pony club isnt an option how about putting a notice up in your local saddlers or seeing if there is an equine college near you with learner instructors. there may be afew people near you who are learning to teach and would love willing student to practise on!
good luck! Emma x
