Hi we are looking to get a reg Dartmoor and have found one which sounds perfect and looks lovely a good stamp but is roan in colour, does anyone know of any other reg roan darties? Would you be marked down in show ring? I see in description of breed colour a roan is allowed? Just haven't seen any at shows Any help would be fab Thankyou

Is it definitely a Dartmoor registered with the Dartmoor Pony Society or is it a Dartmoor Hill Pony?

No help, but I saw one advertised a wee while ago (definitely registered Dartmoor) that looked super, and wondered the same thing. Ended up finding a pony closer to home, so didn't look into it any more, but would be interested to hear what people in the know think.

There are roan ponies in most of the breeds but they aren't very common, if the breed description says the colour is within the breed standard and its properly registered then you shouldn't have a problem other than the fact that some judges will not be very sure what is is! You could check with the DPS. Some judges love roans. If its a good example of the breed you should be fine the trick is to imagine it as a black or bay. We had a roan welsh pony who was fab - they do change colour with the seasons. Good luck!!

just call viv at dps and she will tell you what you need to know and if you know its name she will tell you if its registered or not

I'd be interested to hear (in a generic, non complaining manner!) experiences of showing a roan dartmoor, just wondering if it can cause the same sort of interesting issue/comments as for instance showing a black highland in mixed company can ocassionally do. As I said, we have a pony now, so just being generally nosy, really, or for future reference.

Will keep you updated, I have only seen the normal bays, blacks and odd grey and never seen a roan put forward at a show, but I see its a allowed colour !! Will def raise a few eyebrows !!

One common mistake found in Welshies is that a pony in the process of greying out is called roan - maybe something to check out?

I saw a lovely roan mare at Shilstone Rocks a few years ago, so it wouldn't surprise me that you have another. I imagine you will be fine in breed classes where there would be more knowledge on the specifics on the breed requirements but I am afraid, I wouldn't be too hopeful in mixed classes where quite often, clichés of breeds seem to be required! Good luck though

Judges would most likely just assume it's Welsh in mixed classes!
