Ohh love this!!
I've got a few....thankfully all local shows.
In a ridden veteran class we came second to last out of 8 or so. 'he just doesn't look as old as the others for me'
Same judge as above. Hack class Pulled top, dropped to second to last of about 7/8, your horse is turned out to perfection, did a lovely show. You are both just to turned out too well....?!?!?
Oh forgot this one, In hand riding pony class. Stood second to an unplaited section a with a white halter on lol!

Young handler class this last weekend: I had to place the younger ones ahead of you! Judge was talking about younger ponies and I think you should only do the veteran class! The little gem is 23+ years old and the handler 9:)

have had a few horsey ones over the years but my favourite is non horsey. My friend had recently moved to the village. She had a beautiful fig tree in her garden. The local fruit and flower show came up, and she entered her magnificent figs in 'Fruit - other'. She was the only entry, and was given second prize. I think the judge must have thought she had bought them from Sainsbury's, or perhaps thought they were deformed gooseberries.
My young daughter did a young handler class when she was about 7. I had drilled her to walk away from the judge, turn her pony away from her, then trot straight back towards the judge so she could see her pony's movement from the front. The judge will have a good look then step out of the way, I said. Except the judge stayed rooted to the spot and my daughter had to do a handbrake turn to avoid running her down. Needless to say she was then last, despite the fact she was the only child who had a clue what she was doing. Most of the ponies just grazed.

Many years ago when I first started showing shetlands a judge came over to me and said that my shetland was beautiful but he didn't place him as he didn't know much about them. The pony is now 25 but I remember the laugh we had that day. Also got told once that one of my shetties must be a partbred as it had a white hair in its tail.

Ha! just remembered my favourite one. At one show I went to, the worker judge broke down en route and couldn't get there. They drafted in a judge from one of the flat rings, who had never judged workers before. There were all sorts of gaffs during the classes, but the priceless remark was made before the championship. She asked the steward " So now do we have a jump orf?"

I once did an m&m inhand class with my exmoor. Judge placed him 3rd but when she handed out the rosettes she admitted she'd never seen an exmoor before and asked me if he was a good one! I outlined his successes at county level and breed shows and she asked me to stay behind after the class so she could have another look at him. He won his other 2 classes that day! Also did a whp class once with the same exmoor pony under a judge who appeared to be under the influence. Jumped the only clear in the class and was placed third - apparently although he'd jumped the best round and done the best show he wasn't placed higher because "he's just too chunky for a dartmoor"!

I was riding my pony in an M&M working hunter class, and when the judge was giving me the rosette she said to me 'He is a lovely Exmoor'..... He is a 13.2hh new forest!! I couldn't think of a reply!
A few years later I was in an equitation class with my 15hh who has been a nightmare in shows and ruining them in her extension. I had her schooling properly and getting it right so getting a nice show out of her in a snaffle, before she went on summer turnout was a such a good thing. The other girl was on a little pony which just went round(unschooled showjumping pony!) and the judge told me that the reason i was 2nd was she thought the other girl would manage better on my pony than i would on the little one! Little did the judge know it had taken me nearly 2 years to get her going the way she was after being bucked off, tanked off with, evading the bit and all sorts!! I did have to laugh about it afterwards haha!

A well known bsps judge said to me in an open yearling class that she wouldn't judge my horse as shes a pony judge and she only judges ponies, she didn't judge him or any other horses in any of the classes, all horses where at the end of the line.
How refreshing to see an Exmoor in the showring, about my mearly muzzled Dartmoor, this happened many times. my all time favourite

Having initially been pulled in first on my Fell after the go around in a very large class , and then giving what I felt was a good individual show , I was somewhat puzzled to be placed last in the final line up . After the rosettes had been handed out the steward was duly dispatched down the line to stand in front of me and announce loudly " The judge has asked me to inform you that heart bar shoes are not allowed in this class under the societies rules." I replied " Thank you for sharing that information with me . If I ever get my horse shod I shall certainly bear it in mind ." There was a very long silence during which everyone surveyed my mares bare feet , and then I added helpfully " You may also want to share that information with the black Section D wearing the heartbar shoes who has just won the class ." Strangely , the placings stayed as they were .

Our most recent (which I felt was more an excuse than an actual fault) your pony shrinks its neck in giving it no front , so in the next class my daughter went around with reins like washing lines whilst still in a beautiful shape , and was 2nd out of 3 to a horse that was ridden around with its nose pinned in to its chest and was tense as hell! I think it may of more been to do with the fact that my daughter and pony beat said judge at a money show and were supreme champions hence winning the loot!!!! Moral of the story -NEVER go under a judge if you have wiped the floor with them previously!!!!!

At a show last year riding a 13hh Section C the judge asked me if he was a Section D - I simply replied no, definitely a C (if you saw him you'd see there is no mistaking it, he's dinky next to full up C's), she then proceeded to ask me if I was sure!! I was then placed last because she clearly didn't believe me!

The best thing that was said to me was when I accompained my daughter showing my broodmare in a Young Handlers class, I disecretly lead the foal behind her. The Steward, amred with a clip board asked me if I was entered in the 12 to 16 age group as that was the next class... I nearly kissed her; I was 36 at the time It did take a lot of explaining why I was in the ring lol

My best one was being awarded the best Dartmoor rosette riding a Section C in a large breed class! He was highly successful throughout his career so not 'off type' but the amusing bit was one could ever give a small breed award in a large breed class!

Equifest, Highland/Fell/Dales Working Hunter class, judge to rider, "He doesn't jump like a Connemara, does he", to which my daughter replied, "I should hope not, he's a HIGHLAND!"

Catkin, I was asked by a fellow competitor whether my Welsh Sec D was a Dartmoor - at least the judge knew what she was!

Many years ago when showing in the lead rein class we were told that if my daughter had smiled when she did her show she would have won and not been placed second! She has won many classes since then without needing to smile!
