Hi everyone. I adopted a terrier cross dog, about 18 months old, about 6 weeks ago. He is a lovely little dog and very friendly. Until about 2 weeks ago, he was very clean in the house, but recently he has started soiling in my bedroom once a day. He goes out in the morning and does his poo, but going out once doesn't seem to be enough, he produces a phenomenal amount of poo each day! So unless he is being watched, he goes upstairs and goes in my bedroom, always in the same place. I tell my husband to shut the door properly but he doesn't. He gets shut in the kitchen when we are at work in the mornings, and all night, and is clean ( the dog I mean!). Even if he has been outside for hours, he will come in and do it. I try to anticipate when he needs to go out, but sometimes he can poo in the garden then come in and do more in the house. I never tell him off, as I never catch him doing it. He gets fed dry food twice a day, do you think he is getting overfed? He goes out for a long walk of at least an hour off the lead every day, and usually twice..fill of energy and not overweight. Any suggestions? Thanks

Has he been neutered? Put a stair gate up to prevent him from going upstairs. I think you need to tell him off, he will know it is his poo, and unless you correct him he will asume it is ok to go in the house. Dogs should be fed twice a day so if you are feeding the recommended amount then that should not be the problem. Make your husband clear it up... he will soon remember to close your bedroom door properly

Hi thanks for replying. Yes he was neutered just before we got him, about 2 months ago. I can't use a stair gate, as our house is really old and the stairs are too wide for any gate to fit, otherwise I definitely would. I will tell him off then, I always thought you shouldn't after the event as the dog can't remember what it has done wrong, but I understand what you mean. Will let you know how it goes x

Take him to the "deed" put his nose to it and say naughty firmly. You need to get one of those neutralizing sprays too so that the smell of "this is my toilet" goes. You can get stairgates with side attachments to make them wider, we got one off of ebay, it was not expensive. However if it does continue you should give proper help, talk to your Vet. Did you get him from a rescue center? If so then talk to them about it. I know I will get shot down now but on my past experiance I would never get a dog from there again, we had one and it was never clean in the house, luckily , as I was about to have a baby, it disappeared and we know it found itself a new home. I know many have had rescue dogs and thay have been fine but my experiance was dreadful.

Neutralizing sprays are good. Perhaps you are overfeeding him, without seeing him I wouldn't know, but we do tend to overfeed. I weighed my dogs feeds and then actually cut it back a bit till I got to know how much each needs. My terrier does her biz in the morning, while the lab does a lot more, I suppose they are like us, some will produce more than others LOL. To me he sounds a little insecure and doing it in your bedroom is more about that. Even if you can't put a stairgate across, put something so he can't get up the stairs - we use suitcases, fairly easily moved for us to get past but do the required job without having to drill into walls. Personally I wouldn't tell him off for doing it unless you catch him in the act - but we all do things differently. But I would be giving him loads and loads of praise when he gets it right, and does it where you want him too. You could also try changing his food to a different kibble, some of the brands are very rich and cause more byproduct than enough!! Good luck.

just one little note, our stair gate does not require screwing to the wall, there are preasure pads, no drilling required, but suitcases sound like a good idea

Just an update on Max, think we have cracked the poo situation! He has been clean now for weeks, I just made sure he went out at very regular intervals, and took him to the same spot in the garden each time,. Also I think what you said about the insecurity was right Louise, now that he has settled in properly, he seems much better. I have had a couple of dogs from rescue before, and have to say they have been great, the last little terrier didn't like being on his own, but that was all. In fact the worst dog we had was the one we had from a pup, so suppose you never can tell.Anyway, so far he is delightful, long may it last!

Really pleased to see this. I would agree with you about not being able to tell, and I think that some take longer to learn than others, a bit like kids and change can cause a regression. Hope to see you over the summer x
