Today we have sent an e mail out to all our judges. It was mainly about the results of a survey they recently took part in but in the letter we included the following
Marks & Changing Marks
A current topic of discussion and one that has been brought to our attention is the changing of marks. If you have to change a mark this can give rise to competitors doubting the marking process especially if the mark is changed to a lower number and affects the placings.
To help avoid any problems when marking we advise the following:-
1. Speak to your steward before the class commences to ensure you have a system. For example you say the mark the steward repeats it and then writes it down.
2. Check your marks are written down correctly as you go through the class.
3. If you find the steward has misheard a mark make sure you initial the change beside the mark AND we advise you write down the time and a brief explanation. To go one step further you could also ask the steward to sign the sheet to confirm the process.
4. If a steward has misheard a mark this should be picked up straight away if you use the repeat before writing down system. The mark can then be amended during the judging of the class so the final mark for that horse will be added up correctly and allocated on the 1 - 100 sheet ready for the final result.
5. If the marks are added up and the results placed in the 1st - 10th box and then the placings are altered this can be interpreted that the mark was not amended during the judging process but afterwards once the final result is known.
NOT in the letter but I would like to add
TSR supports their judges and we will not tolerate judge bashing on SM we will always follow it up. Some of the comments arise because the correct procedures are not followed and this leads to competitors jumping to the wrong conclusions and it becomes a feeding frenzy. The judge is always responsible for the results and the steward is a ring assistant so marks must always be checked before the final placings column is filled in if for some reason the steward goes ahead and fills it in before presenting the judge with the marks to check a judge should add a note on the bottom and the steward should sign it so exhibitors are aware. This is particularly relevant to Agricultural Shows who rely on a mixture of stewards some who may not be fully aware of what is riding on the results.
It is all about transparency. I think when the marks were first bought in and perhaps still at some Ch Shows the stewards are reluctant to let the judge see the marks as they think the judge in some way might manipulate the scores. This is an old fashioned attitude and it is vital that judges can keep a handle on the whole process to avoid problems later. Stewards should avoid carrying over marks from one sheet to another before the end of the class or preferably have a third steward with a master sheet doing the collating.
