How are the astride skirts made, looking into making my own, do people use a template or what?

Hi shetty
I've made several outfits and I've used a neutral coloured plain wedding type full skirt, not with flounces! The skirt can be dyed to match the rest of the outfit theme if necessary. You can make a template for a circular skirt you just need to know how to fold it.
The skirts need to be fitted onto the rider and very carefully cut up the middle of the skirt (with a bit of luck there might be a seam that can be unpicked) to a level just above the pommel of the saddle.
Turn back the cut material and sew a neat hem on both sides of the skirt and across the middle to prevent the material fraying or coming undone.
I have always sewn curtain weighting on the hem of the skirt to keep it down.. Weighting can be bought by the metre at most stores selling curtaining. It's usually the heaviest one.
The above is usually the cheapest way of getting a skirt made to suit the theme. I usually go round the charity shops that deal with donated wedding dresses. There are lots that are 2 piece outfits. I've never paid more than £10 for a skirt.
Or, go to John Lewis or any other store and look in the pattern books for a skirt, or a full outfit for the size of the jockey, that you can make from scratch. There are some lovely patterns for period costumes that I have used for varying friends. We've had some good wins and placings.
I know that there are people on horse gossip that make concours outfits but I think they may be costly.
Hope the above helps but you can pm with an email address for any other advice you might need.

Thanks Kateanne0 how do you know a normal full skirt is the right length? I've got measurements while on my pony from my waist to toe and waist to ponys tail.

Thanks Kateanne0 how do you know a normal full skirt is the right length? I've got measurements while on my pony from my waist to toe and waist to ponys tail. What size are you? If you look for your standard size the length on you will usually be ok and you can try on before you buy. Alternatively, look for a skirt with a longer train. Then measure the back length of the skirt to the measurement you have taken on your pony. You can always ask the charity shop if you can return the item if it doesn't suit the purpose, just make sure you put a cotton sheet on the pony to keep the skirt clean. There are some lovely patterns for outfits that are quite easy to make and you can adjust the lengths as necessary. Look for the style you want, don't be put off by the type of material used on the face of the packet! If you are making an outfit for a child, I would buy a pattern. I don't quite know how to describe the turn back under your leg to keep the skirt in place, however, I used 2 pieces of ribbon one at the hem you created when you split the from of the skirt and one at the same height further in the skirt. Easy to tie and keeps the legs covered. Hope the above helps, good luck If you get stuck just ask and I will answer any questions I have a look on HG most days.
