Rusty, the star of the stories in the Showing Journal and currently sitting in the lofty position of 5th place when you Google Image search 'rusty horsebox' is up for sale
£950
Towcester, Northamptonshire
Are you a sadist?
yes? then this box is for you!
If you can afford a decent box then keep scrolling, if you are skint and have lost all hope that you'll get on the road then read on..
1987 ford transit box (yes that's right..its older than you!)
MOT until 26/04/18 sailed through last two MOTs
2.5l Diesel
The good:
-This has had loads of welding in the past, wheel arches, sills, etc, the chassis is in good nick for the age
- the seats are nice.. really nice, totally refurbished a few years back
- the horse area has a metal floor, covered with ply covered with lightweight Equimats
- The horse area is BIG
- I have pushed the partition right over to one side so there is plenty of room inside to tack up etc and for pony to turn and come off forwards, the space is very useable. The partition can be moved back to the middle to make a more conventional layout and I actually have a further spare partition if needed
- ramp is good and sound, I can put it up alone but there is a knack to it
- new starter motor a year ago
- fuel pump taken out and totally overhauled at a cost of £800 in 2015
- replaced timing belt in 2015
- replaced four of the six tyres in 2015/2016
- Headlights adjusted and new bulbs 2016, all lights and indicators work
- camera fitted in 2016 this has a camera in the horse area and a reversing one however the horse area one has stopped working which unfortunately means nothing will work, the horse area one could be replaced cheaply to get the thing working again
- new battery in March this year
-12v socket added in cab 2016 and 12v power to horse area for four LED lights (which are not included in the sale)
- New starter solenoid in 2016
- The box area is separate and is bolted on and could be moved to a new chassis
The bad:
- its noisy as hell which is handy if you don't want to make conversation with any passengers (carpet would help, see below)
- there is no carpet in the cab, its rougher than a badgers arse
- the CD player works reluctantly and only if the CD has no scratches, the radio you have got no chance with despite me paying out for a special arial!
- the bonnet is dented and doesn't meet with the body work but it does have a double latch and is secure
- it had new wings and arches however they weren't primed and so the paint has flaked off (makes it look bad but its cosmetic)
- bottom of doors are a bit ropey, could do with rust grinding away and sorted however they are ok for now
- The dashboard isn't a big fan of working, none of the dials light up at night for example and the speedometer is way off
- the roof leaks in places but this could be helped greatly by a coat of rubberised paint on the roof
- Its high and learning to drive it effectively takes a bit of time and practice
- it has wooden sides are nasty and heavy but they are solid, If I were keeping this I would change the sides to aluminium panels and probably would make it a pony box with herringbone dividers
- there is only one unloading gate, the other is buried in the gravel on my driveway and the buyer is welcome to it if they can uncover it!
The ugly:
- there is something draining the battery, the horsebox will start after a day or two of standing but after that needs charging or jumping for it to start, the source of the power draining needs to be found and fixed or the battery needs an isolator fitted, I have made peace with this putting it on charge overnight before using
- Because of the age the engine judders and very occasionally the fuel injectors loosen and the engine cuts out, I now carry a small spanner and tighten these after every few uses and the problem hasn't reoccurred
- There is NO power steering
- Its underpowered up hills, it needs a new fuel injector I think but it does go and if you are patient will get you up those hills!
I've owned this for nearly three years and its been the butt of many jokes but its given me three years of getting out and about that I would not have had otherwise and despite all its problems its being used two or three times a week currently
