We have just started the hunt for a large standard shetland. Daughter would like to do a bit of in hand and a bit of ridden and maybe workers.
We know nothing about shetlands!
We are however experienced horsey peeps so don't panic!
Any information you can give us would be very much appreciated. I'll say what we do know and hopefully those of you in the know can fill us in!
Looking for full up 42" but these seem to be like hens teeth! Where are all the large shetlands? We would like a well marked coloured as we could do CHAPS classes too but then we were told that shetlands HAD to be black? Really, I am convinced the shetland that won at HOYS last year or perhaps the year before was grey? Are all the good shetlands up in Shetland?
Don't want to sound like a snob but all the Shetlands advertised for sale so far that I can find are pets and haven't ever seen the inside of a menage.
I found the sales up in Lerwick and Aberdeen this weekend and Reading later in the month and yes looks good but how the hell do you get a pony down from there to the south of England? They don't I believe hold them for you, you have to have the lorry ready and waiting for your new little treasure but they are more than happy for you to bid electronically!

I'd have thought there would be commercial transporters up there ready and waiting - ask the auctioneers?

Shetlands do NOT have to be black (however if reading adverts etc any that are not black are often referred to as "coloured" but that may not mean piebald/skewbald etc for you to do CHAPS)

Hello, my experience is that you are unlikely to find too many up to height coloured at these sales. When I went to Shetland, there were a. not that many for sale and b. most were mini or midi height. I haven't been to Aberdeen, but I think you might be more big ones there. Reading has more minis than standards usually. If you are interested in a Shetland from Shetland, try Clivocast. Lovely, large ponies. Few, if any of the ponies at these sales will be broken. I would suggest you look on shetlandpony.com - there are usually a fair few for sale there and lots of good studs listed. I would recommend Viv Hampton (Briar stud) as hers are bred to ride/drive (I have known many personally. Emma Leivers from Ulverscroft stud would also be a good place to look at. Shetlands can be any colour bar spotted. Good luck in your quest!

on transport, there are transporters at each of the sales who sort out the lairage/stabling on the journey home to you.

Whereabouts are you? A friend has a very nice Shetland for sale, a bit green but as good natured and willing as you'll ever find, would do well I think. They are in the Midlands
