Anyone with any medical knowledge who can help? Had a bad fall 6 weeks ago resulting in a fractured sternum and 4 days in hospital. When discharged was recommended no riding for 12 weeks, but know that the hospital err on the side of caution and was hoping I might get back on earlier. The fracture was not pinned and was discharged without any follow up visits/physio etc arranged so obviously the fracture was expected to heal easily. Am aiming for 9 weeks, would anyone with experience be able to advise as to if this is reasonable. Pony has been away on livery since the accident but want to get her back, get back on and resume my life.

That sounds painful! I would be very careful about going against medical advice. I’m no expert on this (32 years as a nurse tho) but don’t forget the sternum protects the heart and lungs and so I assume if it were to crack again the potential for more damage could be there. Good luck 😊

I suppose another way to look at this would be that if you get back on too early before it is healed and have another fall and fracture it again, it could put you out for the summer? 12 weeks does sound like a long time in terms of bone healing. Are you going back for a check up at all? Could you ask at that appointment if you are going back??

Actually got back on yesterday on my old pony in the indoor and fine at walk and trot, but could feel a slight twinge in the breastbone sitting down and going into canter. This is now 10 weeks. So will probably stick to walk and trot only for a few more weeks. There has not been any arrangements for a check up, but as there is no plaster cast or anything I suppose this is the norm. Can still feel slight twinges at quite simple movements, but am being quite careful. Have bought myself a Racesafe body protector which I intend to use, but interestingly the fitter told me they are really to protect internal organs and are not really to stop fractures. Really wish I could turn the clock back as the fall was honestly brought on by my impatience and I am well old enough to have known better. Hindsight though is a wonderful thing. I do know that I actually was lucky, it could have been worse.

That sounds really painful I have no experience of a broken sternum but I did break my ankle 2 weeks ago and that has been painful and a absolute pain in the arse, I really hope you feel better soon and wish you a speedy recovery x

Thanks for this, useful, had a look and they are giving 4 -6 weeks for healing. I don't think I would have been anywhere near ready then, but as I won't see 60 again I suppose I will take longer to heal. Am feeling much better than I was just hoping the confidence hasn't taken a knock, only time will tell. Going to take things slowly with my young pony and not go so gung-ho with her. What a wally I was.

What a wally I was. Glad you are back on board. It's wise to take it steady as it's the muscle that now need to build again rather than the break. It will be this that is causing your twinges. TBH it's just like anything that gets an injury, the rehabilitation process is always slow and like you've said about you being in your more mature stage of life these things do take a bit longer. Hope you are fully mended soon. Xx
