TSR Survey Results Conclusions
The Question:
Should judges show and compete in the same section in the same year?
How many people took part?
1163 people took part in the survey, there were 5 incomplete surveys that are not counted
Result - 78.15% thought Judges should not judge and show in the same section in the same
season. For full results see below.
Conclusions from Survey
The Showing Register Independent Judges Panel met on the 12th November to discuss the
findings and to agree further action. Their conclusions are as follows:
• The largest group taking part were Exhibitors and the result reflects their concern.
• The judge’s sample was small by comparison.
• Respondents who were a judge and exhibitor voted 40.48% in favour of not judging and
showing which was surprising.
• It was agreed that more data was needed about the level of judging / competing and to
what standard of show this applies to.
• It was suggested that an individual with one animal to show who also judges would have
less impact than a professional person with a yard.
• The sections that concerned respondents most were M&M classes and Coloured classes.
• The most repeated comments received were ‘conflict of interest’ and 'would there be
enough judges if this was implemented'.
Action to be taken by TSR
It was agreed that
1. TSR will strongly recommend that judges do not show and compete in the same section in
the same year.
2. More data and the opinion of judges was required before any further action should be
considered. The Showing Register is mailing all the judges on the TSR Judges Register to
renew their annual listing. They will be asked to return a Declaration of Interest form
indicating if they will be showing and judging and if this is at local level or at major qualifiers.
This will give TSR an insight into how this will affect judges and their opinions on this
matter. Someone may be a HOYS judge but just show a novice pony locally or be a HOYS
judge and compete in qualifiers throughout the season. This extra information should allow
TSR to come to a more informed decision on this matter.
