Should a True to type Sm Hunter be able to compete in the Int SH classes That's what I thought the classes were for ... but if it's a horse not a pony depends it's down to the judge Just slightly confused...

There aren't many that win in both. Not saying that you can't do both, but ultimately completely down to what that judge onot that day wants

My view is one is a Pony - of Hunter type The sm Hunter should be a horse .. that gives a balanced ride, that goes forward with self carriage .. not held together and booted every stride!

We are not talking about Show Hunter pony classes and I believe an Intermediate Show Hunter should be a horse, and yes, I think they should be able to compete in both classes. Just make sure it is ridden and produced like a horse in either class and not a pony-------------running along with it's nose on it's chest. UGH !

There are many intermediate SH than compete and do well in small hunter classes. You could argue a small hunter maybe slightly more horsey than an INT but both should be horses and both should have limb and go in the correct way for a hunter. The only difference is in small hunters is they get ridden by the judge which maybe where some INT horses suffer as perhaps they haven't been produced in the correct to carry a ride judge.

I have nothing to do with any of these classes - but why should a pony go running along with its nose on its chest? Surely a correct way of going is a correct way of going regardless of whether it is 11.2 or 17.2, pony or horse in type?

I think, as ever, yes the same animal should be able to do both classes. However, in the Intermediates there are certainly a lot of types forward and the ones that seem to dominiate tend to be the 'stronger' ie. middle or heavyweights v lightweights, if that makes sense. However, there are a couple of top class intermediates I know of that have moved from smalls to this class, though not sure if they compete both classes in one season
