Where do people recommend one looks for a jack russell puppy? I've had a look on Gumtree but there's some seriously dodgy looking people/dogs on there and I'm a bit apprehensive about buying from total strangers. I've also had a look at the dog section on here but it's rather dead and I'm not sure if people look at it.
Any recommendations? I'd be really appreciative of any advice.

I would look on the recommended breeders site at the Kennel Club, it shows those breeders who have been checked out

The best thing to do is go see them. You should know from that if they are suitable. Go with your gut instinct. If you are unable to view with Mum then it’s a big no no. Unfortunately given the type of dog you are looking for you are going to find some unscrupulous breeders. Phone up and speak to the people. When we advertise our pugs/min pins I don’t reply to anyone who texts asking to see them. There’s just the one litter on the KC website at the mo in Cumbria. We have found lots of happy homes through the Pets4Homes site. Also try horsequest as they have a dog section too as do horse & hound. Good luck.

If you are anywhere near Lancashire/prepared to travel we have a reputable breeder/kennels near us who breeds gun dogs but sometimes has JR's for sale . They have been in business for years and we had a brilliant Norjack pup off them ( Norfolk Terrier X JR ) who was the love of Mr F's life . She sadly passed away a few years ago at the ripe old age of 18 .His dogs are so popular that I think the only 'advertising' he does is to put a sign out front when he's got a litter for sale . I can PM you his details if you're interested . We got one of our current JRs as a puppy just through word of mouth . We let everyone know we were looking and were told that someone's aunts boyfriends sister ( you know what I mean ! ) had bred a litter from her bit*h and a friends dog ( both of which could be viewed ) and a lovely litter of pups they were too ! So tell everyone you meet that you're looking for one , and keep your ears open .

Word of mouth. reputation. Connections.
What made you decide that it's a JR that you want? A friend's dog which you admire, maybe? Ask where did they get theirs from . . . . . and take word of mouth suggestions, as others have sensibly advised. Make sure that the Breed will suit your lifestyle and that your lifestyle will suit the Breed, if you see what I mean. Good luck in your quest for your puppy. You sound keen and dedicated. So, don't even think about Gumtree ads, with no disrespect! Fine for inanimate stuff like furniture and very 4th hand cars . . . Finally, remember the old saying "a Dog is for life". The Dog's life. I'm sure with time you will source your perfect puppy. xx

Thanks for your advice everyone We already have a jack russell who we adore, and we've always had them. We lost our old fellow last year and would love to replace him; we've bought from the same farm home for years and years but they're not breeding anymore and don't know anyone who is. If I went to see any of the poor souls I see on Gumtree I think I'd be scarred for life - I'm a total soft touch. We're in central Scotland - we would be prepared to travel over the border for the right wee one, although probably wouldn't want to go too far just because it wouldn't be fair having them make a long car journey home. It's just so important to us that we get the right dog, from the right home, with (hopefully) the right temperament.

If it helps, I could ask her where she got them from. Her most recent one is still a puppy. Thinking about it, I also have good friends in Fife with super JR's. But you don't seem to be a member on HG so I can't send you a message - you would need to contact me.

Hi Caroline - I think I tried to add you on FB :) Thanks for all your kind advice Hi - I regret I'm not a lover of FB altho' stubbornly, I realise that it's here to stay! The only 'friend' requests I accept are people I know in the real world, so stray names get deleted. Apologies, I hope this doesn't offend! However, my contact details are in the public domain. So, you could e-mail me on caroine.nelson4@btinternet.com
