Hi there, I have an 18 year old Mare whom I considering putting in foal. She has had a few foals in the past, the last one was 5 years ago. Some of my friends think that it's unfair to put her in foal at her age but others have said that it is absolutely fine - what do you think? If she does have a foal, it will be retained by myself.

I've known mares foal into their late twenties. If she's a happy healthy mare then there's no reason why you shouldn't put her in foal.

Agreed. I'm planning to cover two 17 yos this summer without having a second thought about it. As long as she is healthy and holds her condition well she should have no problems. I tend to stop when they're about 20 although as Philippa says they can easily go on well into their 20s.
