Hi, I have a 7 rising 8 year old cob who wont ride alone after a few yards after the stables. However he is perfect with other horses with him - will happily go in front or behind. I have tried the technique of having the horse ahead halt and we pass in a walk/trot and he is very happy to do that. Its something about being completely alone he isn't too keen on. Is there any tips or ideas to help get past this? He isn't spooky, the most he does in tucks his bum under him and trots forward, and gets excited and very forward going when he sees other horses! Any tips will be really helpful. Thank you!

Hi,I have dealt with horses that don't like hacking out on there own ,I am just helping a lady at the moment with her gelding ,I have been working with her for 4 weeks twice a week ,and she and her horse are now riding out on there own ,for half an hour at a time ,the best advice I can give you is to first get someone to walk at the side of you ,then progress to that person hanging back ,and letting you walk on in front to the point were they are just walking out of the yard and staying there and letting you carry on the road ,it takes abit of time ,but you will get there ,hope this helps .

Hi, Thank you for the advice. I took him out yesterday and someone walked with me and then hung back at certain points, crossed the road, walked behind etc. We even trotted in front. This is a huge improvement as last time he was out alone he was spinning and bucking but he didn't put a foot wrong yesterday! I'll take him out again but this time my friend will hang back much more. Hopefully its onwards and upwards but he is 7 rising 8 so I'm expecting him to nap, but I'll just ride him through. That's fantastic news about the lady and her horse, I do hope they can begin enjoying their hacks together! Especially with summer around the corner
