Hi guys just want a bit of guidance on this issue.
Moved to new yard a couple of months ago. No worming programme in place as I asked at the time. Wasn't that bothered as mine is up to date and has been egg counted and wormed accordingly for the 2 years that I have owned her. Now someone's mare unexpectedly dropped a foal. Mare is passing worms so they have decided to do a worming programme. Great stuff I thought it suits me! Got a message to say egg counts every 3 months and tapeworm every 6 months. Egg count to start on the 10th September. I questioned this and asked why we can't do tapeworm at the same time as it is coming in to that time of year and it means everyone can get done for everything and only need worming once for everything if needed. I got told no. They have basically admitted to me that it is due to cost that they don't want to do it all this time as they have four and it's the cost at egg count is £7.50 and tapeworm £16.50. They have said they will do the tapeworm test in December and June. Surely this is to late on my understanding? Plus I also pointed out they will then be paying out a load of money right before xmas!!! I have sorted it and have said I am doing tapeworm on th 10th aswell as she is due it and then if they also want me to re test in December I will. We have been told we have no option and must go through them and stick to this worming programme. So am I being unreasonable? Was I wrong? What would other people have done? I worry that I should have just gone with it but it's against what I have been taught and know.

I have rung my vets and because they want people on their programme they were very cagey with me. Unfortunately my vet who I had used for nearly 20 years has retired. I could talk to him and there was a lot of mutual respect now I don't know any of them and it's hard work!

Speak to westgate labs. Even if worm counts are coming back clear then you still need to worm for encysted redworm over winter.
In terms of tapeworm saliva test, it's not something I've done as of yet but Westgate will advise on the best time of year to be doing this. If worming for tapeworm then once a year following cold weather is usually sufficient.

Funnily enough this is who it is with. I have spoken to them and I am happy with what they have told me but hard managers are saying they have been told different by them! This is my problem. So I want to test for everything nx month and worm accordingly which westgate have said yes that's fine. Yard manager wants to egg count now and worm accordingly then egg count and tapeworm test in December which I feel is to late for the tapeworm?

Mine are wormed for tapeworm once a year in the spring - I haven't tried the saliva test either. I do cross graze with sheep here which I think helps hugely with decreasing worms.
