When i took my riding pony mare and foal to an Arab show to show in the broodmare and foal class, my foal was 4 weeks old. The judge placed my foal 1st and said he was a great thinker! I am a judge myself and still to this day do not understand the logic in that comment!

Horse went fantastic, was pulled in third behind a coloured and roan and judge said to daughter"horse went beautifully but i couldn`t put you higher as she is not really a coloured" Horse is covered in spots and is part bred appy!!! ;D daughter just smiled and accepted her rossette graciously!

The most recent comment we had was in a yearling class when the judge told the handler the filly wasnt "mature". Er.......... It is a yearling class isnt it? By mature I think she meant it wasnt rolling in fat, nor did she have an over inflated topline achieved by tieing it in sidereins from weaning onwards, and the other way to get the topline my farrier informed me was by feeding them steroids!!!

The worst one I had in my youth when I was very skinny was on a very good WHP. I took a large championship and at the rosette and cup award he peered at me hard and said "I thought you were a boy, I wouldn't have put you champion otherwise". I was mortified :-(

we once had an argument between judges in a SFAS qualifier 1 judge wanting him 1st etc the other said it cannot walk, trot etc an they had a bust up in the ring so ended up 2nd haha also a few years ago gt tld in an rihs qualifier tht i had already won enough throughout my riding career an didnt need the qualifier as they had seen me win when they used 2 steward. then we found out tht they had changed the mark sheet when looked at it as we had actually won lol!

I had that one frozzy. My yearling who had won all her outings to date was put last. The judge came to me and said she loved the pony and it was the best mover in the class but she "looked like a baby!" I told her she is a baby - she's a yearling in a yearling class. "Ah yes dear but you know what I mean" of course I do I replied you mean she's not fat and overtopped - maybe that's why she's the best mover! Next time out the same pony won a huge class at the Great Yorkshire.

Also a judge telling young jockey that my extremely well mannered stallion was a lovely pony and if gelded he could do pony club as well! Worrying thing is that this was a PUK panel judge and said pony has won many breed championships and qual HOYS twice, won Kingsford Final and sired HOYS qualifiers all with the same temperament. Luckily this was a piece of advice we chose to ignore.

Just remembered one My daughter took our little bay pony into an unaff SHP class (mixed height up to 15 hh) about 12 in it, our pony was nearly always in top 2, my youngest was only 4 days old on the day of this show and I was feeding her in the lorry so didn't see the go round but peeped out and saw he had been pulled in last, wondered what on earth he had done wrong. He did a fab show and pulled up to win, the judge told my daughter that the pony was an idiot and needed to be totally reschooled before he should ever be allowed back into a show ring........

The last judge in our last novice m&m ridden class was lovely and made me laugh through the whole show! He was welsh! Asked for forward for our individual show and asked me "What is he then?" A Highland pony "ahhh, we don't get these in wales you see!" I smiled and began to wonder should he be judging this After we were pulled in 1st again and he came up with our rossette and blairs qualifier he started to ask me "Is he hard to stop?" Then starting speaking about maccallum[ponies show name] whiskey..... He also asked alot more about when I got him how much I'd done with him and if he was my pony! He really did make me laugh and I think it was the best individual show we have done! ;D Another judge said at our first show on grass my boy was determind to go at 100mph through the whole class but did give a spectacular gallop! Was given 3rd out of 4 with a simple comment "Hes forward going isn't he" And that was it

Kayjayem - I'd have taken that as a compliment assuming the judge only said "if" rather than as a piece of advice. Surely it just meant that he/she admired the temperament and manners of your pony? Not all ponies in the ring of any sex would be suitable for a child to do PC, let alone a stallion who of course would not be welcome there without a special acceptance.

about 18 years ago i entered my very well schooled welsh cob in a class titled best ridden c or d.there was only 3 of us in it.one was a plaited part bred the other was a little girl whos pony wouldnt canter and ran in the line up and wouldnt move.my cob went like a dream as usual and we are always immaculately turned out but were called in last. i thought the judge had called us in reverse order as the plaited pb was called 1st but then the judge went to give the rosettes out starting with the pb,i heard the steward ask the judge what are you doing then they started argueing, anyway when the judge gave me my 3rd prize he told me that it said ridden c or d in the schedule not ridden c or d welsh cob.it was in the welch cob section though.i let the other two do their lap of honour before i did mine as i knew the crowds would give me a standing ovation as they always did when i won at other shows. steward apolagised to me and havent seen that silly little man judge again.

I was at a coloured show recently with my yearling and in my first class I was told that I would have won, had I bothered to put hoof oil on my yearling...!!!!! I had actually put a very light spray varnish on his feet as the use of hoof oil is actually discouraged in CHAPS classes...which I started to politely say but was told 'don't tell a professional how its done' Against my better judgement I took my yearling into the next class (same judge : to be told that I shouldnt trim his tail because its unlucky and was placed second last. Needless to say I didnt do my last class as by this time I had concluded she was a bit batty...

last season my daughter was judged by c porter at a local RC. she did the pba, showing and SHP classes and was told "i love this pony and he has a lovely extended trot and gallop but i cant place you because you are to big for him and i dont like the way you ride him compared to the others.
so finally came the veteran class and my daughter was dreading it as she thought she would be placed bottom but to our suprise he pulled her in 1st after the go around. every one did the show and my daughter won the class judge said "finally a class i can place you in" daughter just took it in her stride and said thank you ;D

Grooming for a friend about 5 years ago - judge said she adored the pony but she was overheight for an Exmoor. Bearing in mind this was a large breeds M + M class and said pony is a Section D, dark dun with a mealy muzzle. I was in fits of laughter - friend was not amused - judge is still not amused when I post this story on Tin-ter-net County level - what can I say ( chuckles) ps - would have been furious if it had been my pony though

I had the oppposite with my Exmoor at rc show last year, in an inhand mixed height m+m class
Judge- That is a Welsh crossed with what, my dear? Me- She's an Exmoor Judge- Oh, I've never seen one like that before...... Is she a good example? Me- yes, she's a very good example. Judge- what do the brands on her shoulder mean?
At this point, I just wanted to leave the ring. She then placed us 2nd in the LARGE breed section!!!!
Now can I just add, that my pony is registered, and has won many County shows, so I was just wondering what she thought an Exie did look like? (I didn't have the nerve to ask!)

At local level a judge in the odd colours class separated all the different colours out - because thats how you do it at "national level" and he is a national level judge (He is not on ANY panels!!). A friends roan pony was then put down for having dapples! i wonder how many people have seen roan, dun etc classes at county level... IVE BEEN SHOWING MY FILLY SINCE THE FOAL SHOWS, NOW A YEARLING, HAVING BEEN SUPREME CHAMPION AND WON A BRONZE MEDAL, AT ONE SHOW THE JUDGE PUT ME DOWN AND SAID TO STEWARD THAT TECHNICALLY I SHOULD BE SENT OUT THE RING BECAUSE OF HER COLOUR !!!! SHE HAD ASKED WHERE SHE GOT HER SPOTS FROM AND SOMETHING MUST HAVE GONE DRASTICALLY WRONG WITH HER BREEDING!!!! SHE IS PALOMINO WITH SMUTS/INK SPOTS ON HER, THAT WILL PROBABLY FAD AS HER DARKER PALOMINO COLOUR COMES THROUGH. I WASNT SHOWING HER IN A PALOMINO CLASS BUT A WELSH CLASS!!! NEXT SHOW I WAS PULLED IN 1ST AGAIN, SO I NOW THINK THAT EACH JUDGE AS THEIR OWN OPINION EVEN IT IT IS A STRANGE ONE!!!!!!!!! NEXT SHOW SHE WAS 1ST AGAIN SO IT SEEMS ONLY THAT JUDGE HAD A PROBLEM WITH HER.

At the 2nd show i took my intermediate i was placed 3rd out of 7. The judge then went on to tell the 1st and 2nd pony that they should try and aim to get their horses looking and going like mine. As he was very quality and well schooled. He then told me that I came 3rd because he didn't look very happy. Somebody had videod (sp?) me and he had had his ears forward permanantly can't quite work out how my horse could of looked happier... maybe he could of smiled for the judge!

many years ago my son showed a grey shetland stallion very successfully. we also had a lovely grey mare who won a lot as well. at one show she was placed second and the judge apologised but said that he was not moving as well as usual with less presence than last time she had seen him. my son replied that maybe that was because he had left his willy at home this time and was a mare.

Stunning pony but Weak on the back end is what I got told the other day. So I replied oh thats funny cos the pony stood in front of you has won lots this year and no judge has ever said that. The Judge replied oh maybe its because she has been out showing too much. Oh she hasnt been out since the great yorkshire? The judge said well that is my opinion and I replied well in my opinion I think you will find you have placed me here because you dont know who I am? I then proceeded politely with DISGUSTING JUDGING thank you. Excuses excuses, I followed this up by asking the opinions of 2 other judges available that day and they said there was no weak back end at all.

Am I reading that correctly Are you saying that you are a well known face in the showing world and the judge should have therefore placed you higher? Or are you saying that because you weren't the judges pal/neighbour/ sister in law that she found an excuse to place you lower than you should've been Either way it comes across as a bit conceited and very rude to the judge, who's opinion you had asked for. I am all for getting feedback from the judge either good or bad but I think challenging them in this way is very rude Or am I just reading it totally the wrong way If so, then apologies.
