i think all fed back should be taken with a smile, even if at some points you do not agree, you just have to take it on the chin and hope you get better fed back at your next show, as i say" thats showing for you, you win some you lose some" as long as your horse/pony has behaved well and you feel they did there best for you, you should go home feeling proud of them, i just try and take any comments as constructive critism, even if you dont agree with it let it blow over your head, every judge is different and so is there opinions,

small child took the pony in a PUK junior handler qualifier and won the class. the judge handed her the rosette and whispered well handled but you would do better with a better pony as she was a very bad example of a welsh b child smiled and said "that would be because she is a county show winning highland then" We still laugh about it now pony still wins and is placed at county level in the hairies class

Howabout this one. A friends pony, very nice welsh section a came second in his open class, the judge said, on handing the rosette, nice pony, shame he has laminitus, the child riding asked what do you mean, he has never had laminitus! judge said because of his neck he must have, rider replied, he is a stallion! Judge went on to place the pony champion that day and looked rather embarrassed!

I entered my 2yr old filly in a M & M class for 1, 2 & 3 year olds. There were 14 in the class and we were placed 2nd, The judge on handing us our rosette said " She is a cracking filly but what a shame there is a 3yr old in the ring" ????

Talking of 'facey' judging - I'm afraid I'm just the opposite, perhaps too much so. 'Facey' judging isn't so common or obvious at local or Riding Club level.
When the entries come in the ring I study each animal as it goes past me making a mental note of it's initial/first impression. I might point out one or two to my steward that I could be concerned about re. their behaviour etc. but I can honestly say I never look to see who is riding them.
This continues right the way through the go round and it's only when each animal is brought to stand before me and I say 'good morning' that I may notice whether the rider is a boy or girl.
I may recognise the pony from previous shows and know it's form but that's as far as it goes. Some exhibitors have found that I don't give a d*mn who they are and will only place as I see fit.
A few weeks ago I had a beautiful little pony come under me, well ridden and very true to type. Now, I do not have a lot of time for the pony's connections but I just HAD to put it first and later made it Champion which must have come as a shock to all. It was a challenge - but I felt good about it afterwards. You have to forget personal feelings at such times and prove to yourself as well as everyone else that you are a fair Judge.
Acquaintances have found that a phone-call the night before doesn't work, neither trying to chat to me before the class as I avoid that at all costs, and afterwards.
Sorry, this has gone off the original subject but I have found that I have developed a very thick skin over the years and also lost a few so-called 'friends' along the way. I hope no-one could ever call me a 'facey' Judge.

at a welsh medal show recently the judge pulled a very well known face top in every class whose ponies bucked, reared and kicked out in their trot round- even laughing at their antics. When looking back at pics these ponies were lovely but not always best in their class. I know you have to weigh up behaviour with conformation etc but when you can't even see their trot and you still pull them 1st then why bother doing a trot round. Why not just stay at home, post the judge a photo and get your rosette by the pretty picture it makes or just have the judge read the catalogue and post out rosettes. I just love showing...can you tell?

Forgot to get to the funny bit - she said to me lovely mare and I said he's a gelding to which she mumbled to the steward I wasn't looking at that.

My sister was riding her pony in a unaffiliated working hunter pony, she went clear and in a good hunting pace, the mare is very forwards but my sister makes her look push button. She was put at the end of the line. (The pony that won and a sparkly browband its boots left on in the go round ect..) I thought well she must have done somthing wrong to be last. The judges comment was...
"Her round was more of a hunting pace" LOL working "hunter" This did make me laugh!

yeah there's nothing like being asked (whilst in an m&m class) "what is it? arab cross with what?" or being told that the green hairy beast that got pulled from last to first (after being the only horse to not canter on the correct lead) in a show horse class did a better show than anyone else -COME ON. Or maybe when you ask a judge for some constructive criticism on your new youngster " I just didnt like it. I dont know why." aaaagh. why does anyone bother.

I did an equitation class on my old mare, she was really badly behaved so was shocked to be pulled in 1st! The judge said she put me first because i deserved some credit for riding "the old bag"!!!!!

we had a classic the other week at a local argricultrul show, our 15h mare was in the vetrans and people may say im biased but she looks well for her age, she was pulled top and did a beautifull little show. Then wen the placings were announced we were stood in shock she had been dropped and got a lousy 'special' 1st was skinny and ran off and the following 5 wrong legged!!!! when i asked the judge her comments she said well i have judged this on manners, how well they look for there age and on my personal preference!! what a waste of time and money

my little girl did the veteran class last weekend huge class all range of ages. 1st was a 15yr old which went well but i don't really class it as a veteran 2nd was lame the rest looked buggered and the good old 32yr and 37yr olds fit as fiddles who did lovely shows bottom of line and why because they were lead reins???

I used to have a Highland youngster with a white blaze, I took him to a PUK qualifer to give him an outing expecting to be bottem of the line. Got pulled in 2nd!!! Then when we did our trot up, and where put in first place much to my amazement. When the Judge gave me my rossette she said' You donn't see many Highlands with white on them'
My daughter took our pony inhand when she was about 13 at a breed show. The judge told her that it was the best pony in the class but because the way she had shown it he could only give her third. Try explaining that. By the way she did trot it up but couldn't get him to stand square. I also Steward at shows, one Judge spent all day thinking that the pony she pulled in 1st was a Connie, not until the Championship did she find out it was a New Forest when the other Judge told her. I may have understood this but the pony looked nothing like a Connie . This was also an afilliated show.

my mum took my new pony in the in hand small breeds youngstock class at a show on monday he went really nicely and behaved he then went on to win which we were all very pleased with. the judge asked us if we were going to bring him out as a lead rein next year we said yes. it then turned out that the judge was Mrs Redfurs and we had fallen out with her son due to a problem with the hunt cutting the fences when they'd been through etc.(we're all really pro hunting but it's been going on for years). i then took my Welsh B in the ridden M&M smalls he went well in the go round(he spooked at a v. noisy tractor) was pulled in last he then went the best he's ever done for me and still came in last i thought he would at least come up to 3rd or 4th maybe even 2nd. the pony that won was a lovely dartmoor deserved to win but 2nd wrong legged on both reins and isn't very true to type Welsh A. the best bit thougth was some people came up to us afterwards and said that you'd have been 2nd if we were judging it turned out that they judge in hand and ridden A's&B's at county level HOYS etc! but then the old judge had had at least 2 pints througth the afternoon god knows how many others he'd had before the first class went in!
