my favourite was in the M&M ridden qualifier at the swpa champs the judge said to me about my pony tell mum you need to put some petrol in the tank. i love that comment, still makes me smile now. I was pleased with 2nd though as the winner was a very nice pony and had gone well.

best comment yet- we put a show pony in a mountain and moorland class who had just won her show pony class-the judge said, after placing it 4th, shame she has had her feathers taken off and tail pulled or you would have won! We only put her in for something to do!

We only put her in for something to do! well I suppose to be fair to the judge, he/she can only judge what is in front of them and if you show a pony which has been excessively trimmed in an M+M class, they are going to say that he has not been shown correctly as per the Breed requirements

Mine this year was in a Ridden coloured HOYS Qualifier - the judge got off after riding my horse and said ... "nice saddle" .... and walked to the next competitor ;D
I guess at least they said a nice comment!!! lol

Sometimes a fantastically comfortable saddle can make a bad ride rideable and an ordinary ride special!

Last weekend I had my two year old welsh D gelding in an M and M youngstock class. He came third in a big class which I was pleased about until she handed me my rosette and said, "I really like him but I have seen him several times under saddle this year".

We have a 3 yr old 15.3 hunter. He has had a 1st, and two 3rd places in hand at county level this year. We took him to a large show recently and he was placed 4th ( the 3 above him were huge ). The judges comment was " I hate seeing small hunters in hunter breeding classes, but yours has so much quality, I couldnt overlook him" Maybe she should give me some advice on which class to enter him if small hunters are not a part of hunter breeding. Do you not think that sometimes these ridiculous comments are just an exscuse so they can place certain individuals at the top of the line ?

At my daughters first show, she was told by the judge who shows section a's himself that she had to take the heart shape off his bum as it was a local show i was very surprised at the level competition, until i realised that it was a qualifier for the royal london show lol, and she still qualified hence to say he never had a heart on there again and the judge still comments about the pony we used to have, didnt think it would be that rememberable but he was beautiful ist just a shame he would come off the lead rein.

I once got told (in a novice class) that the pony I was riding would have been placed much higher if he had a better jockey on board. Really a way to encourage novice combinations!!

Put my yearling section B filly in an open M & M in hand, she came last. The judge said I really like her she is a lovely mover, very pretty and has good conformation but im looking for M & M's today!!! I say "she is a fully registered Section B with the best of Downland breeding" ."Oh" says judge in a surprised voice " but she has quite a short mane"!!! "she is only a yearling " i reply "oh" says judge in even more surprised voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

think I have a better one. In a CHAPS ridden class I was placed last even though my horse was the only one to go correct canter leads because she didn't smile! Really horses smiling? Its amazing what good breeding can do!
I also got told that my youngster has super paces - she is going to be a super star in the future but I just can't place her in the open class as she is imature?!
I then came under a judge at a county show with the youngster now ridden to be told in the championship, it will be this pony's turn to shine next year, she will be champion then - I fully understood why she didn't win as she needed miles on the clock and more schooling etc, but two weeks later I came under the same judge who said 'is this the pony I judged at *** county show, I said yes. she replied saying arh yes - she would do so much better hogged out - she is a traditional that has a show pony daisy cutting action on the front and is only 14hh! not to mention the fact she is very light boned. I was slightly baffled coz I was last that day.lol.

i once had a judge that the breeder had competed against and took the olympia qualifyer. In my ridden class this judge said to me that my horses confirmation was rubbish and that my horse would never get a 1st unless there was only him in the class. I went on to win all of my in hand classes on that day and i took ridden showing champion that season at that show and supreme in hand champion at an affiliated show. Some judges hold grudges.

This one was a stewards comment many moons ago in a first ridden class, it was a top six through to the evening and i remember the judge pausing for a long time behind me with her steward. Anyway my number was not called for the top 6 and we we're a little miffed as he did one of the very best shows. We went to speak to the judge after the class to ask advise on how to do any better, the judge didn't have any negatives and well fair enough if he just wasn't her cup of tea. But the steward next to the judge then said 'doesn't matter you've qualified for the evening in another class haven't you?' we replyied ' no we came all the way just for this class' steward then looked rather guilty! hmmmmm

we were at a local show the other week as a warm up for three counties, and i led him in the the lead rein, it was a big class so split into sp/shp types and m&m's keeping us all in the ring together, our section A was pretty much asleep whilstwe were waiting to do our show. came out did a nice show, were pulled 3rd in the end, judge said to us "he could of been more settled,i felt he was a little on his toes" !! that's after he had fallen asleep!

We went to a local show last weekend with a pony that needed to get out a jump a few rounds - I thought it interesting that although he jumped clear he was third - the two above both had fences down. The judge said he was "quite nice" but it was obvious she was not judging the class just his ability to win at a higher level. In these cases I think half the entry fee would be appropriate!

Last year I went into a Child Handler class @ a local show. I have won all my handler classes in the past apart from this one. Even if i do say so myself, i was the best in the ring, i was 4th. (Out of 11ish) The judge came up to me & said.... "You are an amazing little handler so i had to place you here." Me-"So why am i so far down the line?" Judge- "Well 4 is a bigger number isn't it?" Me- "Thank you" (I then turned to my friend in 3rd & laughed as quietly as i could but laughed so much when i left the ring!) Another time i was in an Equitation class & i usually win this hands down. I came last, rather annoyed & upset so.... Me-"Can i have some feedback please? What did i do wrong?" Judge-"Well your pony went backwards at the end of the show, you should have stopped it." Me-"I was doing a rein-back" Judge-"Oh, OK. I think you should only do a rein-back when the judge asks as they may think the pony is misbehaving" Me-"You did ask for a rein-back" She just smiled looking embaressed & walked off! A few years ago i did a handler class. There was about 16 in it & i came 4th. I asked for some feedback & they said "If you want to do well, make your pony be naughty so it looks as though you are handling it well. The winners pony reared & she let go, that shows she is clever" I felt like saying "Noooooo, that shows she can let go of a LEAD ROPE!" But i didn't ! lol

trouble is at some shows people just expect to win it comes across as just arrogant ,local shows are just that (as in roystan vasey) local shows for local people not the rosette hunter leave it to the novices just my opinion sorry deviated from the thread i also have had some strange comments whilst showing to numerous to mention
