Comment from 2 of our judges on Sunday:- 1st comment:- our 122cm 3yrs show pony - too much body, she's a SHP - yet the pony stood at top of line, had just as much body, with no neck (but lead by a producer)
2nd comment:- our stallion lacked top (he's been covering mares), not that the other stallions in the class where overweight lumps, who have possibly not seen a mare all season.....
Wish these judges would make there mind up......
Anyway did not give the 2nd judge a chance to pass comment anymore - packed up and came home.....

Local show the other weekend, took youngster into "prettiest face" class. Judges comments? "She's pretty, but not in a Kate Moss way". 'Nuff said.

The judge once made a comment about our dartmoor
"Your pony is too fat that is why it goes too quick"

I've had a few good ones.
At a local show I took my New Forest gelding, who is forest bred, he came 1st in the youngstock class, then in the M&M class he came last, so I asked the judge "why?", his reply, "lovely pony but wondered why you put a TB in a M&M class" Words failed me!
Then again at local Show I was asked if my black shettie was a Dartmoor!!!
Funny one though was when my friend showed my Arab in a veteran class, in the individual trot up he knocked her over and dragged her round the ring on her belly, when giving him the special rosette at the bottom of the line, the judge said "If he had'nt of done that he would of won!" Hilarious!

Tell me about it!! 2 dirrerent judges too! Yep he said "A lovely youngster you have there, but can I ask why you have a TB in a M&M class?" I just said he's a New Forest. He just raised his eyebrows and walked away!! If I could have been bothered I would of taken his passport over to him. Hence why my New Forest has never stepped onto a local showground again!! He's been show champion 3 times since. ;D

I was at a show last year on my coloured hairy in a coloured class and the judge asked me what i was showing him as?? i thought it was a trick question
Also took our section a to a local lead rein class, he was so noisey and to be honest he was weighty, he got placed 2nd which i was really pleased with, afterwards we were getting ready to go home and the judge came over to me and told me he was hoys potential!!! I said do you think so? is he not to fat and she said no he is just perfect.. I nearly died afterwards, you couldnt see his girth for the rolls of fat!!!

i remember being judged once and the judge walked up to my mother at the end of the class (i was placed second) and went ' i was convinced your daughter was going to win that but when I added the points up she was 1/2 a point behind......
Also when at suffolk county, they havea best fell section, my fell had been winning everywhere including champion fell at puk and when I went for the best fell section the judge went ' oh are you a fell i judged you as a highland in the last class which is why you weren't placed as she isn't a very good example.....i bit my tongue

I have had a couple but the ones that stick in my mind were last year I was being judged by a fairly well know horse woman in a large breed m&m class. She pulled all the hairies in the top followed by the welsh's - when I came out to do my show she stood back looked at my boy and said 'What breed is he?' well there is no mistaking he is a welsh c - he stands about 12.3 is very chunky and very welsh looking what else cld he be - i felt like replying no he is a fell can't you tell!!!
my second one was when my old dartmoor did his first first ridden class. He had only been cut around 6 weeks and only done about 5 shows with me on board. He did the novice FR class and went foot perfect. Pulled second and did the most fantastic FR show when all the others wrong legged, napped etc. He ended up being dropped to about 6th my mum (who is not usually like this) went up to ask why and she replied 'he went far to well for a novice - he went more like an open'!!!!

I went in a condition class once with my mare and came second, but the pony above me was looking awfull, so I asked for a comment and was told he put me second because he didnt like to colour of the hair on my horses belly, she was dark bay but was slightly lighter underneath, and the pony infront was the same colour all over. Duh Iv never got over this, it still makes me smile.

Once in a novice show pony class which stated ponies must be ridden in a snaffle bit, which was my sec b's first ever ridden class, I was told by the judge that he needed a pelham. He was also constantly being mistaken for a mare and an Arab. At a Welsh medal show he was pulled in 1st in mare and gelding class then dropped to last because he couldn't be used for breeding. Fair enough I suppose but it was a class for geldings too.Though on another occasion to prove he wasn't an Arab I entered him in an Arab and part bred Arab class which he won I was MORTIFIED wasn't sure whether to confess or keep the rosette. Every one has a different opinion I found it was easier just to smile and say thankyou.

I had an idiot of a judge at equifest in the ridden part of the 3ft 15hh working hunter class. My 5 year old jumped clear (after alot of bucking) and then was the 9th horse to go in to do their seperate ridden part. i was placed 4th out of 10 clears, well happy! . However, after the rosettes were given out I thought id ask for a bit of feedback..apparently "there was that many that she judged she couldn't remember which one I was..you just have to look at all the horses together and compare which ones you think are better". As if she said that to me when I was the one before the last one that she watched...idiot!

About ten years ago at the Stourhead Show, my daughter was in the first ridden class, the schedule had said plaited and M and M's welcome. The judge gave my daughter her second rosette and said "tell your mummy if she had bothered to plait you would have come first."
There you go then!!!!

we had a t/b put last in a youngstock class because the judge didnt like the bridle!!!!!
our coloured youngster has been put down the line for being too immature in a youngstock class.
same horse in a youngstock class was told she has to grow a bit!!!!
also had a judge tell us we would have been first if she hadnt seen it misbehave in the collecting ring even though it was perfect in the class!!! (good job she didnt see it in the lorry lol)

Haha, this thread has cheered me up today! ;D I was once in a handling class (young handlers) at a local RC, I thought I did pretty well and the pony went nicely aswell. It was a big class as it was their 'trophy show', so when they did the placings they did it in two rows. There where about 14 in the class, they only placed the top 6- I thought I would get placed as I usaully do really well in this class.. but I didnt get placed Fair enough.. judge's choice But I was then told I would have been 'placed highly' , but I used my whip 'an awful lot!'. To which I replyed.. I dont even have/carry a whip!! I was about 9/10 at the time

(good job she didnt see it in the lorry lol) what an absolute idiot of a judge! and also, i thought they were only allowed to start judging once the pony it has entered the ring for the class, judging a pony on it's behavier when working in is completley unacceptable and i would (if i was you) have put in a complaint
