i spent 2 hours at our local walk in centre last night as i was bitten on sunday by a horse fly. my foot has a huge blister on it and it has swelled so much i cant get shoes on ( only crocs) i am now on antibiotics to try and get any infection out and hopefully it should start to decrease in size soon. if the horses get bitten by these i truly pity them they are so painful.

Hope it works, I have just ordered 10 bottles too, had to see medic at Northern got bitten myself and arm blew up, so I know how poor horses feel!!!! - going to try it on me too........ I know - the horse flies round me have a sense of humour - I swell up really badly when bitten and i have been bitten on both my bum cheeks - slightly uncomfortable and very embarassing when trying to apply antihistamine cream!!

aloe vera excellent on the actual bites - asap after biting if you can! Most of mine have field shelters (which they stay in most of the day) and I bring as many as I can in during the day. They really hate going out much before 9.0pm Someone mentioned turning out at 4.0 pm - still hours of fly weather ahead. Deet good for midges but not for horse flies. I am also covered in bites which are covered regularly in aloe! Delightful summer isn't it? J

With something as small as a shetland couldnt you put a bed sheet on then stitch it up around their body and legs to make it into a 'romper' suit, that would cover them wouldnt it!!! What about using those stretchy covers used to protect matresses! Come back english weather, i wont moan again about the cold and rain.......!

p.s.: had vet down this morning, poor pony has conjunctivitus - she said they'd had lots of calls due to swollen runny eyes. anyone else had these problems, get it treated asap! Even though fly mask was being worn when turned out at night.

Sounds ridiculous and most of you probably wont like it but I use Raid fly and wasp killer on my welsh x arab very sensitive mare and used to use it on a TB,bloomin brilliant but test it on every horse to check no reaction.I have used it on lots of horses and never had a reaction and keeps them well away also cheap!

The field is humming with the sound of flies - my pony lives out and does not like to be in his stable for long periods of time and his stable is quite warm as well as no breeze so he and the rest of the gang stand in the shade flicking each other with their tails in a group hug.
I am feeding him globals herbs fly free and it does work to some degree as he does seem to have less normal flies on him than the others but horse flies are persistant none of the sprays so far seem to work. I have now ordered something called effol horse fly blocker - who knows if it will work but might as well give it a go!
I did not realise the horse fly season was only a few weeks seems like they have been around for a while now!

I use a fly gel that i get from a medical herbilist, it contains NEEM which is a indian herb.
It really stinks but seems to work it is good to put on youngters who might not like being sprayed because you just wipe it on with your fingers but i always use a latex glove to apply it cos it stinks and the smell lingers for hours .
Always used this on our last show pony as he reacted to all other types of fly repellent.
If anyone wants to try some i have some more cos i have to buy 20 tubs at a time it is £10 a tub
Have already sold some to showing friends locally . pm me if interested or will have some with me at the Royal on Tues and N of E next saturday.

I have one that has really sensitive skin..i think a horse fly has got trapped in the front of his fly sheet and has bitten so many times all in one area. Does anyone have any advice to get the swelling down and remove the heat from them?

I will try and find out the name, but there is a supplement that you can put in their feeds and its apparently meant to be extremely good! Its about £12 a pot and makes your ponies/horses stink! You just add a couple of scoops into each feed twice a day and the flies do not touch them. Will find out the name and get back to you x

Does anyone have any advice to get the swelling down and remove the heat from them? My mare had the same problem. I tried all sorts and it never improved. I finally tried NexTex sweetitch cream on the lumps/bites and they went right down straight away and have now practically gone.

The best ever spray I have ever used is watered down TCP, dirt cheap and harmless, okay for wounds too. Tried on a friends mare with very bad sweetitch and it has worked that well it grazes all year without any additional protection. A small drizzle to a litre of water does well for me (they do stink though!) and usually doesn't need reapplying like some on the market . Some people mix with tea but no idea why, just adds to the hassel. See for yourself, flies will go nowhere near, its fab!
