My lovely new mare "LILLY" had her shoes taken off for xrays, during the vetting. She then had a 5 day period before the farrier could come and put shoes on. Once the new shoes on, she went very lame. Farrier came back and she has a badly bruised sole, which the shoe was resting on. Shoe is now off. I am hot tubbing - espome salts and hot ANIMALINTEX poulticeing twice daily, then padding/bandaging/taping up. Any other tips on how to get this to heal quicker? She is VERY lame and not seeming to improve?

hi lovepink, i know this may be an 'obvious' thing to say, but is she stabled on a thick bed day and night, preferably a shavings one! Have had these probs before it just takes time. Wouldnt hot tubbing promote more heat to the foot therefore more swelling - dunno really, sometimes even having padding underneath puts a bit of pressure on the brusing too.

Get a nappy (disposable) fill it with normal sugar. Mix with iodine into a mushy paste and put the foot into the nappy. The nappy helps to keep all in place and the mash helps ease the bruising, just don't get the iodine onto your hands!

I'd be inclined to leave her in (if she is ok with that) on a really deep bed of shavings as already advised and again with some padding put on can cause them to feel it even more but it depends what is working, if she can stand being in for a bit I'd leave her without anything on with plenty of shavings

Tessy your idea sounds very EXCITING.....LOL
What size nappy and how do I keep it on? What does the sugar do? I have just been so sainsbury's and didnt buy nappies as my kids are 8 and 10 yrs...... LOL
She is on a full bed of rubber matting and shavings. I did turn her out yesterday with a hoof boot on, but she came in worse, so is now IN FULL STOP. She is a horrible messy moo in the stable, who churns all her poo into the bed YUK, so I am keen to get this problem sorted ASAP!

Ah thanks Ellieraga. No I am doomed to keep riding my sons pony......who tanks off with me up the bridleway LOL
Seriously, I have had her back done and some physio done on her, and am feeding her up as she is a bit lean, so its probably a good thing, that she is having a rest to let it all settle properly. I am just desperate to get riding her!

the idea with the nappy, sugar and iodine is very interesting, never tried that for a bruised soul but now adding that to my first aid list! have used nappies for abcesses but not in this way for a bruised soul
you sound like you have the same luck as me lovepink! they are sent to try our sanity!

Sugar and iodine is very good for thrush, mix it into a paste and pack down each side of the frog, keep in place with vet wrap leave on for two days, hey presto thrush gone, again don't have a clue why, just know it works.

I just love this site. The knowlege everyone shares is just BRILL. I didnt have a nappy, so I had a brain wave and cut up a FLASH MOP REFILL...........LOL
Stuck the sugar and iodine on (luckily I have a huge first aid trunk, so iodine bottle in there), bandaged and taped on.
I am very excited to think I have done something positive to help her.
THANKS TONS GUYS for the help!

My pony was getting very foot sore on the hard ground and noticed some bruising on his feet. Got some Keratrex hoof hardener to strengthen his hooves and it also helps with soundness. Sometimes poulticing the foot can make it too moist therefore becoming too soft hence then the foot very sore. Just my opp, hope whatever you do works xxxx

TIME and PATIENCE cannot be beaten in these kind of circumstances. If i was you i would put some padding in the bottom of your hoof boot (excuse me if you already have) just as an extra bit of protection, somethimes they can takes weeks to recover.

i have just got over them same problem and is good to read through this coz mine had no shoes on,then had them put on but the lameness did not change,my mare was lame for 3 weeks and then one day (sunday just) just went sound, I was told by my vet not to cover it at all coz it will soften the sole and may cause furture problems, she was on box rest for 7 days(3 day cut her eye open in there),5 days bute and then back out in the field of a day as told no more box rest is needed and will heal better while out in the field. hope she stays sound for you and as they say what works for one does not for the other

Thanks elliebee. I put the testers on quite hard today and she didnt feel a thing! The iodine and sugar has been a miracle and I am "hopeful" that once the shoe is back on, we can "carefully" get back into work!

Have a look at the Keratex it says on the box that it helps shoes to stay on, and for bruised soles it maybe worth talking to your farrier about it xxxxx

I did look at the Keratex yesterday, I think I still have a bottle in my first aid kit actually. Its £24 to buy new, so decided better not spend any more money at the moment! From what a lot of farriers say, Iodine does just as good a job as Keratex, for a fraction of the price?
Whether they are right or wrong, who knows, but its def cheaper!

Farrier just came and put shoe back on. She was still a bit sensitive to the nails, so he has advised carrying on with the sugar/iodine poultice for a few more days. I will turn her out tom and hope she doesnt go lame again!

Lunged her last night and she went POTTY! After box rest for 8 days, I suppose its to be expected, but really POTTY.......!
I suppose if I was ultra critical, I saw the odd tiny hint of lameness every so often, but on the whole, she looked pretty good. Had to bath her from head to toe afterwards as she was dripping in sweat! My school is trashed! Its not the best school in the world and the surface doesnt take abuse like she gave it!
Am carrying on with the iodine/sugar for the time being, overnight, to try to really keep on top of the bruising coming back.
