can anyone give me advise on what I can give to a couple of youngesters to try and stop sloppy poops!!! They have been in for 5 days due to the weather and a couple have started with the 'trots'!!!!! thay are fed haylage and youngstock pellets. Is there something I can add to feed or a feed that can bind them up abit, someone has recomended bran but I am unsure thanks in advance

You cant feed bran dry! it will swell up inside and could cause problems ! colic for example!

It's probably the sudden change onto haylage that's done it. You could try adding a probiotic to their feed or if you could mix it with a bit of old hay and change gradually it could help

Hay as Kayjayem says above would help, changes should be done gradually, like not all of a sudden feeding haylage, ours have it for weeks before we bring them on, out in the field. There stomachs need a chance to adjust and bringing in and suddenly starting to feed haynets full of haylage is not a good thing to do and that can definitely cause colic.

they have had haylage out in the field in smaller quantities but they are having it is the main part of their diet at the moment. I think I will give the hay idea a go. Thanks for your help x

Bran fed dry works very well and it does not swell up-it was recommended to me by my vet years ago when our 13shp got the runs (he has a funny tummy). Obviously fed as a bran mash it has the adverse effect !!!! I always feed a little bran with his normal feed if he has the runs and it clears up very quickly.

oh deary me, you only have to look at it when you add water to see it swell up!! i despair! hate to think that was happening inside my pony, jeez what is wrong with people? our friends vet missed a broken bone, not always right!!
hay does the trick! and to think i used to sell ponies to people! glad i dont now!

Nat12 I think you have a very unfortunate written manner!! I have every faith in our vets as have had ponies for many years now!!!!! I stick to my original post but agree hay is also very good. May I also point out that my ponies have an excellent home!!!!!!

Thats fine you stick to it, but as i told the original poster, by pm, a friends pony was pts after he colicked through her feeding dry bran, so no you shouldn't feed dry bran!
why dont you try swallowing a big mouthful of the stuff yourself, see how easy it goes down, and have you never realised how dusty the stuff is?

Dry bran has traditionally been used to dry up loose horses with no trouble at all. Of course if the pony escaped into the feed room and ate half a sack it could be different, but that applies to all feeds. It does not swell up when wet to the same degree as sugarbeet. Sloppy bran mashes, on the other hand, are for horses that need loosening.

Another fan of pink powder. Wet bran, i was told, actually lossens the stools?? Thats why we feed a bran mash and liquid parafin when ours are colic-y to help them pass through.
